Review

This volume provides a compact but comprehensive overview of psychoneuroimmunology. It is refreshingly different than most offerings in this genre since it does concentrate on clinical aspects...The list of authors reads like a Whos Who in the field...Charts and diagrams are clearly and attractively presented, and the references in all the chapters are unusually complete and current. This offering probably provides the best summary to date of the complex effects of stress on immune system function, and their clinical implications, and is highly recommended. --NEWSLETTER OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF STRESS Provides a current summary of the field of psychoneuroimmunology as it pertains to stress and illness outcomes. The focus is on human studies as well as relevant animal models for human infectious and autoimmune illness. The particular animal models highlighted demonstrate the direct impact of various stressors on the immune system and the subsequent modulation ofinfectious and autoimmune diseases. In addition, these animal studies help to demonstrate the range of psychological changes associated with stressors. --SCITEC BOOK NEWS The new field of psychoneuroimmunology is not new anymore. It is a burgeoning enterprise, worthy of a handbook. This volume, the Handbook of Human Stress and Immunity, signals this coming of age and summarizes in considerable detail what we have learned about a major part of the field, human stress responses and immune status... This volume summarizes and extends what we know about stress, immunity, and illness as well as about potential mechanisms and dynamics of these changes... The book is highly readable... a few chapters provide lively and informative narratives describing research, theory, and future research directions... This handbook is a valuable reference for anyone interested in psychoneuroimmunology or in the general areas of behavioural medicine and health psychology. It is an excellent textbook. --Andrew Baum in CONTEMPORARY PSYCHOLOGY

Product Description

In 1964, George Solomon coined the term psychoneuroimmunology. In the intervening 30 years, this term has emerged into a dynamic field of study which investigates the unique interactions between the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. The Handbook of Human Stress and Immunity is a comprehensive reference for this dynamic new field. Focusing on how stressors impact the central nervous system and the resulting changes in immune responses, the Handbook is the first to describehow stress specifically affects human immune systems. It discusses how stress generally makes people more susceptible to infection, how personal support systems can counteract the physiological effects of stress, and how stress, or lack of stress, affects the aging process. Chapters are authored by the leading names in the field and cover such diseases as autoimmune disease, viral pathogenesis, herpes, HIV, and AIDS.
