4.0 out of 5 stars Sister Act Aug 3 2011
By Ted Feit TOP 100 REVIEWER
The author is known for writing thrillers, sometimes with horrific plots and graphic details. This novel pales by comparison, with merely an offstage rape scene to occasion a police procedural of somewhat questionable means, and a side story about two sisters who have had virtually no contact for 20 years but are in a sense joined at the hip by the rape victim, and then that thread develops into development of a family relationship.

The story is more about the various characters'the two sisters, their lovers, their own background and history'and how each is affected, rather than the crime and ensuing investigation which seems to be an afterthought to contribute to the main plotline.

Written with verve, the novel seems to drag along except for some more 'exciting' portions. Much of the descriptions of one sister's divorce and subsequent life seem labored, and the ending was to this reader quite unsatisfactory. In fact the title of the book might be a fit description for its conclusion: It seems to just hang without any wrapping up. That notwithstanding, the novel still bears reading, and is recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Discover this British writer! Jun 22 2011

I discovered Mo Hayder by sheer luck. I read one book and quickly ordered all the others. These books are the best I've read since the Millenium trilogy...They are thrilling mysteries. ( Or, mysterious thrillers!). The endings are never what is expected! Reading her has become addictive. Hanging Hill is her latest book and it doesn't disappoint! The ending of this book is actually shocking! If you love a good read, read Mo Hayder!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book-loved,loved,loved it!!!! Oct 29 2012

Mo Hayder is one of my favourite authors and I've enjoyed all the books of hers that I've read so far.Hanging Hill was, for me, the best by a long shot....the story was fast-moving with a good plotline.Basically the story revolves around 2 sisters who have kind of grown apart until the horrible murder of a teenage girl brings them together again. There are all sorts of different characters in the book-some good, some not-so-good, and this keeps things interesting and makes you wonder what's going to happen next.
Towards the end of the story,I thought I knew who the murderer was, as was Mo's intention, but then out of nowhere it turned out to be not the case....when the identity of the killer was revealed, I literally got chills and thought "Oh,my God-I didn't see that coming"....really good twist.
I highly recommend this book if you like crime fiction-not a lot of really gruesome stuff in it,which was a bit disappointing, as I like that sort of stuff, but a really good, juicy read.Luckily I downloaded this book while on days off, as I literally did not stop reading till it was finished.Poor dog didn't get walked, the housework didn't get done, husband got no attention at all apart from "mmmm?" and "yep".
One of the best books I can remember reading-ever.

3.0 out of 5 stars Haunting Oct 21 2012
By Jacqueline - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Maybe it was my impatience at Mo Hayder for not writing another Jack Caffery book but I don't think this one was as good as her usual books.
Hanging Hill is a stand alone thriller, with some good twists and turns but nothing to thrilling. Her previous books have all been amazing but this one just doesn't compare. The ending, however, saved this book. Throughout the story I was trying to guess the killer, continuously changing my mind but never settling on one for too long. Loved the ending.
