Product Description

From the Inside Flap

Hank Haney is one of the most well-respected and sought-after golf instructors in the world today. He is famous for rebuilding the swing of the world's #1 player, Tiger Woods. He has also worked with hundreds of top touring professionals, including Masters and British Open champion Mark O'Meara, who says that "Hank knows more about ball flight and what controls it than anyone in the game." Hank Haney's students have won every major tournament in professional and amateur and junior golf.

In Hank Haney's Essentials of the Swing, Hank shows you how to put his approach to work to develop a powerful, repeating swing that can hit every kind and shape of shot — with every club in the bag — with equal ease and with the consistency of your dreams. He goes beyond tips and quick fixes to lay out the principles behind the ideal swing, along with a plan to help you develop yours. Point by point, he guides you through every aspect of your swing, beginning with the grip; moving through stance, posture, and alignment; and on to the backswing, forward swing, contact, and follow-through.

Hank knows that you can never truly understand his instructions until you get out there and follow them. That's why he leads you step by step through practice sessions at the range, helping you get a feel for how minor adjustments affect ball flight and how to make these adjustments while maintaining that strong and consistent swing. In no time, you'll begin shaping your shots like a pro—deciding where you want the ball to go and executing the shot to get it there.

The place you'll really put your new swing to the test is out on the course. Hank walks you through a pre-shot routine that helps you plan each element of your shot, making the best club selection, eliminating tension, checking alignment before your swing, and preserving the essentials of your swing in any lie, with any club, and with any type of shot.

Complete with more than 160 pictures to help you understand the concepts, check your form, and make corrections as you practice, Hank Haney's Essentials of the Swing is a masterwork from a master instructor. It's the resource you'll return to again and again as you improve your swing, become an expert shot shaper, lower your handicap, and reach the height of your game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Instruction on Proper Backswing Technique Feb 20 2012
Format:Hardcover
For me the highlight of the book is the chapter on the backswing. Hank demonstrates the right and wrongs that can occur on the backswing. One critical piece of instruction that all golfers should strive to achieve is the position of the golf club when it is approximately at hip height. At approximately hip height, you want your golf club to be parallel to the ground and simultaneously parallel to the target line. If you can achieve this position on the backswing you are well on your way to having a very good backswing. A good backswing goes a long ways to having a good downswing.

I thought the discussion about swing plane shows Hanks understanding of the golf swing. One of my lingering thoughts having seen Moe Norman hitting balls at the Canadian Tour Qualifying school is the importance of having clean hand action on the same plane as the golf ball. Hank's book is a good source of golf instruction. I recommend reading it. From the author of The Golf Swing: It's all in the Hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for serios Golfers Sep 24 2009
Format:Hardcover
I have four golf books: How I play golf by Tiger, a book by the 100 best instructors of golf in which each of them gives tips on every aspect of the game, Ben Hohan's book on fundamentals and the one by Haney.

Haney's book completely changed my game. It is a must read for any golfer who wants to understand fundamentals of the conventional swing (not the stack and tilt), and want to hit consistent shots. Haney understands where most amateurs fail, and takes the time and effort to make us understand those specific points while emphasizing their importance. For e.g., the use of wrists right from the beginning of the golf swing. Once you read this book, you will feel the urge to coach people on the golf course as you see them make the mistakes that Haney points out.

A must read for serious golfers...amazing book!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read with some good pointers Jun 9 2009
Format:Hardcover
Hey, why not buy the book from the very coach of Tiger Woods, right? This book is short and easy to read. Hank does a good job of breaking down the finer points of the swing.

I found some good ideas in this book. One, for example, is on the back swing feeling the weight on your back heel and through the forward swing focusing the weight on your front toe.

Hank also talks about being willing to make adjustments in your swing to get better. He tells a number of Tiger stories including one where Hank suggests Tiger changes his grip!

Overall, not a spectacular book although it is worth a read.
