Review

"An epic tale, triumphantly told."
—Giles Kristian, author of the Raven series

Product Description

The first in a brilliant new series set during the Second Punic War, from the bestselling author of The Forgotten Legion Chronicles.

In the First Punic War, the Roman legions defeated and humiliated Carthage, their only serious rival for power in the Mediterranean. Now a brilliant young Carthaginian general, called Hannibal, is out for revenge. Caught up in the maelstrom are two young boys, Hanno, the son of a distinguished soldier and confidant of Hannibal, and Quintus, son of a Roman equestrian and landowner. A disastrous adventure will see Hanno sold into slavery and bought by Quintus's father. Although an unexpected friendship springs up between the two boys -- and with Quintus's sister, Aurelia -- the fortunes of the two warring empires once again separates them. They find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict and an alliance forged through slavery will be played out to its stunning conclusion in battle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!, Sep 26 2011

Ben Kane has again produced a very enjoyable novel and the first of several more to follow. I have read all three of his previous books with equal satisfaction.

I have a preference for novels based on ancient Rome and this is the first one that covers the Second Punic War (218-201 BC). It was at high school that I first read about Hannibal and his army crossing the Alps to invade Italy and this novel brought back many fond memories of my Latin classes.

Ben does his historical research well and has a knack of blending facts with a very plausible storyline. The reader is easily drawn into the story with excellent character development and their relationships. Events, conflicts, expeditions and numerous twists and turns in the direction of the story are all so craftily done that one never loses interest and, at times, it is hard to put the book down.

The siege of Saguntum (219 BC), the arduous journey over the Alps (218 BC) and the Battle of the Trebia (December of 218 BC) were riveting reading. They were also an excellent history lesson on this period.

I look forward to the next novel in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Page Turner, Sep 21 2011
By Peter Hibbert - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hannibal: Enemy of Rome (Hardcover)
I enjoyed the book. With historical fiction there is always a conflict between the need to entertain and the need to present the somewhat less entertaining historical facts. Nobody altered history more than Conn Iggulden in his Emperor series. Once a person accepts that, the series was a very entertaining read. This book is basically an adventure story that happens to take place during the second Punic War and Hannibal and his campaign was really just a sidebar. Nevertheless I found the book to be a real page turner. The only complaint I have is that the power that the Sicilian slave held over the son and daughter of the Roman family is not very believable. I kept asking myself why they didn't just dispose of him. That apart I would highly recommend this book.

I've read all the Ben Kane Roman novels so far & have really enjoyed them. Although the stories are fiction, Mr. Kane has done his homework & has researched the subject as much as possible. Start with the first novel to get a grip on the story.
