From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5 While the title of this British import is misleading (the book has few selections that relate directly to birthdays), this collection of wacky stories, poems, jokes, riddles, and cartoon-style illustrations is bound to be a hit with kids. At first Briticisms may put off some readers, but soon they will be caught up in the hilarity of this delightful melange. Margaret Mahy, Judith Viorst, Roald Dahl, Ogden Nash, and Paula Fox are among the contributors. One rather glaring error is the notice in the ``Useless Information'' section that ``The Niagara Falls are switched off at night.'' This casts doubt on the rest of the minutiae listed, although it all seems correct. Some of the book will take some creative thinking before understanding arrives (``mother had to give up tap dancing because she kept falling in the bath''), but it's well worth the effort. Carole B.
