Tom and Melissa Gallant sat in their car at an intersection outside Lunenburg one early summer evening in 1992. After a decade of romance and adventure, they were at a crossroads in their lives. As they entered the intersection, one notorious for brutal accidents, their car was hit by a bus. When Tom woke up in the Fisherman's Memorial Hospital and asked about Melissa, all anyone could say was, "It doesn't look good." She was in intensive care in Halifax. This is the story of what happened in the months that followed. It is also the story of a love affair full of high seas adventure and romance, of life lived far from the conventions of polite society. Tom Gallant is a playwright, musician, scriptwriter and journalist. Tom's poetry and prose has been included in magazines and anthologies. Tom has logged fifty thousand miles of deep water sailing in his Nova Scotian schooner. For a decade he has been a caregiver to his injured wife.

The Humour of Nature is Cruel,

This is a elegant, well-written work which delves into the impact of an instant life shattering trauma on relationships and love. After deciding to separate from each other, the author and his wife are involved in a tragic car accident which leaves her at death's door with profound disabilities. The role of caregiver is very difficult to define. Is it based on love, obligation, responsibility? Perhaps elements of all three? Mr. Gallant explores these issues in a compassionate and humane way. His description of what might be called the "acute" stage of the crisis brought about by a terrible car accident are marvelous. He weaves in and out of time in masterly way. By juxtapositioning "before" and "now" vignettes of life, we can see the emotional devastion this tragedy brought to the author's wife and to him. The weakness in this story (or maybe saved for volume 2?) is that it does not delve into the "chronic" stage of life after hospital etc to the degree one might hope. In some ways, although the incident and its immediate effects are earth shattering, the hospital stage is in retrospect, the "easy" part of a journey into what were well known, but now are uncharted waters. Rehabilitation, no matter how spectacular, cannot erase the event and its consequences. This is a book about two brave people and well worth reading.
