Product Description

From Amazon.com

A band that has made a name for itself since 1992 by updating the Celtic and, more specifically, Cape Breton tradition, Great Big Sea has long mixed poppy original tunes with traditionals goosed up to fit a more modern aesthetic. On the band's eighth album, The Hard And The Easy, the Canadians focus wholly on traditional Newfoundland folk tunes of all shapes and colors. All the music is acoustic and most (surprise!) have a seafaring theme to them. These are tunes that band-members grew up playing at home with family and friends, and there is no pretension or airs. The band¹s sense of humor comes through on gems like country-ish "Concerning Charlie Horse" and "The Mermaid," while "Graceful & Charming" is a sentimental ballad. The Breton tradition comes through strongest on "Harbour Le Cou" and "Tishialuk Girls Set." Adding its musicianship and excellent vocals to the Celtic continuum, Great Big Sea has come up with one for and of the ages. --Tad Hendrickson

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing, May 5 2006
By Christine J. Alford (woodslee, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Great Big Sea are amazing, all their songs make you want to get up on your feet and dance. When i first heard some of the titles on this album i thought it would be a bit drab but boy was i wrong. Went to see the boys in concert and it was even better in person, especially River Driver and Tishialuk Girls Set both were so haunting i got goosebumps. I would recommend this album and all the other Great big sea ones for anyone who wants to put some fun into your life. And if you havent seen them in concert make a point to go

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album!, Feb 22 2006
By A Customer
This album immediately became one of my favourites. I like songs that are humourous, and there are a few on this album. I laughed at the cod liver oil song. Captain Kid is my favourite, but all the songs are great. Any of the cuts on the record could be a commercial hit if picked up by the radio stations. Buy this album! You will have no regrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't help but Sing Along, Jan 5 2006
By Christine (Toronto (In the Kitchen)) - See all my reviews
I have been a fan of Great Big Sea for many years now, and have all the albums. The Hard and The Easy did not disappoint, it has become an instant favorite. They have me singing right along with them. Great Big Sea has brought us some of the music from their own back yard, and because they enjoy and love these songs you can't help but enjoy and love them with them. You can hear that they genuinely love these songs by the vocals and arrangements, making them that much more enjoyable. The lyrics are filled with humour and hope, add to that the unique sound of Great Big Sea and you have an Album that all ages can enjoy. If you are a fan of Pop, Celtic, Country or Rock I guarantee you'll enjoy this album
