3.0 out of 5 stars Not Just a Cliffhanger... Oct. 26 2011
By Aarika - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm somewhat surprised by the great reviews for this book. I picked it up as a Kindle freebie, intrigued by the description, but unfamiliar with the authors or plot. I found myself drawn into the book very quickly and had a hard time putting it down. I couldn't wait to see what happened next, couldn't wait for answers to the MANY questions the characters face. The characters were fairly likable, the writing and editing solid. I really enjoyed it and fully expected to be able to give a great review.

HOWEVER...

Coming to the apex of the action, the book just ends. Right in the middle of an action packed scene, no warning; it just... ends. No resolution, no answers. Nothing. Just promise of a sequel. Wait, what?? It almost feels like the authors wrote a longer novel, decided to break it into two shorter novels, and just randomly picked a spot to "pause" the story. An unfortunate, frustrating spot to stop.

I wanted to give it 2 stars, but that's not fair. I liked the story, the creative ideas, the writing. I was just so mad at the (non-) ending that I can't give it a great rating. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt because I think the sequel will hold a lot of answers and will be just as entertaining as this was. But if you're going to release a stand-alone novel, I feel that you should at least include SOME resolution by the end. Cliffhangers are fine by me, but this is ridiculous. 2 1/2 stars (but I will probably break down and buy the sequel sooner rather than later).

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read... when does the next one come out? July 14 2011
By Dave - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I finished the book in a few days; I honestly found it difficult to put the book down and stop reading. Science fiction and fantasy are my favorite genres and they really nailed a great mid point. There's enough science for it to be "science fiction" without being the "hard science fiction" that would appeal to a narrower audience and just prompt a lot of nerds to call out the authors on physics issues or something similar.
The story line was very engaging and the world they've envisioned, including the political and demographic groups made for a great setting. Overall, I enjoyed the characters and found them fairly fleshed out. I was surprised at several points but it never felt like the authors just tossed in a dues ex machina resolution or hadn't fully planned out the story. I'm looking forward to the next book and the chance to find out more of the main story and how some of the other minor characters play into the big picture.
The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because a few character story lines didn't really make it into the larger story but I am confident they'll fit into the series well and my questions will be answered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning - Cliffhanger Ending! Sept. 26 2011
By Patricia Kenworthy - Published on Amazon.com

Yes! When you get to the end, you'll HAVE to buy the next volume!

This is a fascinating and exciting story and you'll WANT to read REVELATIONS!

The authors created an excellent "world" in Rise of the Magician and didn't bore me to death describing it. Instead, I learned of it through the actions and interactions of the characters. I liked the characters (except the ones who were supposed to be hated - yep, they were nasty!)! There were so many things I still wanted to learn about the characters and their world, that I couldn't just let Samantha and Richard ride off into the sunset on that motorcycle and move on to a different story.

The authors are re-editing REVELATIONS and then it will be every bit as good as this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Try it! You'll like it. April 15 2011
By Jason Earl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
There is no sense in lying. I originally read this book because Collin Earl is my cousin. To be honest, before I started reading this book, I was not entirely sure Collin could *read*, much less write.

It just goes to show that truth truly is stranger than fiction. Not only can my cousin write, but he writes exceptionally well. The setting is interesting and believable, the characters are engaging, and the fight at the end was very well done.

The story begins with the miraculous theft of some technology from a top secret government lab, and then spends the rest of the book linking this theft to an unassuming high school girl and her friends. The only downside to this book is that I am curious to know what happens next. I tend to prefer books that wrap things up a bit by the end of a book, even if it is part of a series. This book ends in what appears to be the middle of an harrowing escape, and it leaves the reader with more questions than answers. You would think that Collin would give his family members a break and share some spoilers, but apparently I have to wait for the next book like the rest of you.

On the bright side, he assures me that the next book is in editing right now. So that's something.

I would say more, but it is possible that you do not appreciate spoilers like I do. Let's just say that I am proud of my cousin, and I expect you'll be hearing more about him soon.

Harmonics: Rise of the Magician is a fun, quick read that blends many story elements together into a captivating, yet incomplete, whole. Harmonics is designed to be a serial, and finishing this book will make you long for the next in the series. Lucky for us, the next one is already available.
