This review is from: Harpsichord Works (Audio CD)
A really nice suvey of Buxtehude's harpsichord music, nicely performed on a terrific instrument (and inexpensive!). It should be immediately clear why J.S.Bach walked hundreds of miles to hear Buxtehude play, and I highly recommend the CD to anyone who has an affinity for Bach's keyboard works, especially Bach's earlier stuff. The Aria and 32 variations at the end here is compared in the notes with Bach's 'Goldberg', but this one's wildly different and quite fascinating in its own right (even though the Aria itself seems rather 'ho hum' to me - apparently based on an old harvesters' song. The variations, though, are really wild!) Buxtehude's organ music is also worth pursuing, but that's another story.
