About the Author

Michael Connelly (born July 21, 1956, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American author of detective novels, notably those featuring Detective Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch. Bosch, named after the Dutch painter of the same name, is the protagonist of a series of Connelly's novels. The character is an LAPD detective. The Black Echo, the first book featuring Bosch, won the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Award for Best First Novel of 1992. Connelly has written other books outside the Bosch series, including Blood Work, which was made into a 2002 movie directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. In 2006, The Lincoln Lawyer was selected as one of ten books to feature in Richard and Judy's televised book club. Connelly is a graduate of the University of Florida, where he earned a bachelors degree in journalism. In addition to his books, Connelly has written for television.

This hardcover volume of three well written and thought out Detective/Mystery novels has a story line that is inter-connected and is a great read. Tough to want to put it down but the tome weighs like a brick so you need a break once in a while. Bosch is a character that you struggle with as to that love-hate type of relationship, as he lives to work and that life is spent in avenging others ... usally at the expense of others. It makes you wonder if there truly is no real justice in this world unless you are willing to cross the line or sell your soul by burying the deep secrets of how good prevailed over evil.

Frankly, I can't get enough of the Michael Connelly mysteries, including both the Harry Bosch and the Virgil Flowers series. Since I only started reading his books in the past few years, I had missed Connely's earlier works. That's why I purchased the two "Harry Bosch Novels" Volumes 1 & 2. The story lines are typical Connelly, intricate, intriguing and engaging. The only down side to the two volumes of the 3 book sets, is that each one is pretty heavy (physically) to read in bed. Enjoy and save money too!!

Detective Harry Bosch Hits His Stride Jan. 3 2005
By D. R. Jeanclerc - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Former newspaper reporter Michael Connelly has been writing intriguing and suspenseful novels for his Harry Bosch protagonist for over a decade now. The first six of these novels have been collected into two hardcover omnibus volumes.

The first volume is certainly required reading if you want to understand the complete background and motivations of this brooding LAPD detective who won't tolerate injustice or any human vice that feeds it either directly (corruption, politics) or indirectly (bureaucracy, laziness, incompetence). They're interesting reads for sure, especially "The Concrete Blonde". However, those earlier stories expose Connelly as a new novelist unsure of what type of character Bosch is destined to be.

This second volume is the work of a much more seasoned and confident author writing about a multi-dimensional and human character. Without giving away any spoilers, I'll say that these three books develop Bosch well beyond just a grim crime-solving automaton who moves from case to case in a very detached manner. He goes after crimes that have personal significance and he undertakes situations outside his role as a police detective. The result is that by the time you turn the last page, you'll be hooked on the Bosch character, not just the stories of the crimes he's solved. That's the hallmark of a great fiction series.

Plus, these three stories are varied and intriguing in their own separate ways. The universe of characters that surround Bosch rotate in and out in ways that are highly interesting without being incredible. "Trunk Music" stretches this point a bit with a story that throws in every angle imaginable and almost loses its way. However, "Angels Flight" rebounds superbly and gets my vote for the finest book of either volume.

These volumes are must-haves for anyone interested in getting acquainted with one of the best mystery writers working today. At a price less than the cost of three paperbacks, you get a well-bound and attractive hardcover book, making this package a wonderful value as well.

A great read! Aug. 27 2006

After reading the "Dark Tower" series, twice, I was looking for another series for my reading time. I never had read any kind of mystery/crime/police type novels before. I kind of feel like I started with the best which is kind of depressing, I will always compare anything else in this genre to Harry Bosch!

I love Harry! Yea he has an attitude, and you would too if you were lugging the steamer trunk of baggae he does.

This book is essentially 4-6 of the Harry Bosch run. Worth the time and money!

consistently entertaining March 26 2009
By R. Hemmer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I have read most of the Harry Bosch novels and enjoy Connely's style of writing very much. With most authors, I cannot read two of their books in a row. I feel as if I am re-reading something. Although Connely's books have some of the same chaaracters and all are set in L.A., each plot stands alone and is well thought out. I read all three, back to back, on a business trip and enjoyed each one.

The author's characters are interesting and consistent without being boring. I much prefer Connely to Baldacci and Kellerman, authors with similar styles. Connely has much stronger writing technique. I have especially enjoyed his newer chaaracter in "The Street Lawyer" and hope he continues to create stories with other characters.

My only suggestion is that he stop referring to the Dollmaker book in his later works. That gets old. Since I didn't read them in order, by the time I got to the oft refered to plot, I passed on the book as I felt I had already "read" it several times.

Three in one! Dec 23 2012

The Last Coyote
What Do Detectives Do when there is no Current Case?

Harry has a pet Coyote in this novel. Well, the coyote is not really a pet. He doesn't feed it or pet it or even see it very often but he has an emotional connection to it. He feels a kindred spirit is roaming the foothills that are just in front of his home that he loves. And his home...that's another thing. It was basically condemned after the last earthquake. He is forbidden to live there as it is supposed to be torn down (at his expense...) but of course Harry cannot abide by that rule. He needs it as an oasis from further issues he faces during this time.

The Last Coyote finds Harry with little to do and that is not usual for this generally very busy homicide detective. As he's not one to sit back and read a good novel he finds something to do concerning an issue that began in his childhood. Just the event of that time will give you some clue as to why Harry is like he is. And like other cases he has worked, it does not leave his mind until all the strings have been tied together. If you don't know Harry yet, please know that he is one of the good guys. He's rough and tough but he accomplishes all that he does with integrity. He can be trusted. And he is, except for the bad guys. They just don't understand trust.

I really encourage anyone who is interested in reading this book to begin with the first novel of the series. You will understand better many threads of this part of the story and see just how his past influence this time. The author's weaving of each of these books is masterful and I am so enjoying knowing Harry. I believe I would enjoy having dinner with him sometime when he's not so busy.

Trunk Music
Mob Lingo

Now this book finds Harry with another case that has many roads leading to it. Harry must travel each of these roads and meet many people who don't want to be met. While Harry is based out of L.A. much of the story is set in Vegas. You see the color and the black and off-white of that city. In situations like this, as with all situations in which Harry is involved, his mind is not in sync with those whose high ranking positions belie the way they think. It's another good Harry book and this one has the bonus of a relatively surprising end. I did purchase this one as a 3-fer, including The Last Coyote and Angels Flight. This saved a bit of funds compared to buying them individually.

Angels Flight
What happened on that short train?

If you are familiar with Los Angeles you will remember Angels Flight Railway. For those who are not familiar with it, it is a short railway. You can board one of the two orange and black incline railway cars and ride "The Shortest Railway in the World." This book centers on a crime committed on that railway.

Since the Rodney King issue, the LAPD has been very careful to avoid any sense of racism. Unfortunately this crime will center on questions raised and unfounded suppositions made and the results that occur regarding the crime.

It is another fascinating road that again centers on Harry Bosch. There are parts of the book that forced me to continue to read for hours. As with all of the Harry Bosch books I recommend this one highly. This is the 6th book of the Harry Bosch novels that I have read and I just purchased the 7th, 8th and 9th books, again all in one book which saved me some money.
