Product Description

From Amazon.com

After his rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" on the infamous Golden Throats album (though it first appeared on the Transformed Man LP), one could argue that the world needed a new William Shatner album about as much as it needed a big-screen remake of TJ Hooker. But Shatner's back all the same with an intriguing, introspective collection of mostly spoken-word tracks that are all the more compelling when it becomes clear that Has Been is, in fact, no joke. Ben Folds played on and produced the record, creating rich, melodic, and varied pop musical backgrounds to Shatner's world-weary, boozy-suave yet thoroughly impassioned delivery. Joe Jackson, Aimee Mann, Henry Rollins, Brad Paisley, and Adrian Belew also stop by to lend their divergent talents. Highlights include the Rollins/Shatner rant "I Can't Get Behind That" and the Folds/Mann/Shatner collaboration "That's Me Trying", which tells the painful story of an attempted family reconciliation. Shatner mixes a healthy amount of self-awareness with a just a dollop of self-mockery and then combines it all with plenty of raw vulnerability to create an effect that is surprisingly touching, highly entertaining, and unlike any music you've ever heard. --John Moe

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprise! This doesn't suck!, Jan 28 2005

While certain songs are clearly co-written by Shatner with Ben Folds to have fun ("Live life as if you're gonna die / Because you're gonna"), other songs are surprisingly well written and touching. Shatner doesn't sing, and unlike his previous album from the early seventies, doesn't scream to try to make up for not singing. The older, mellower Shatner chats through some very human songs like "That's Me Trying," until others take over for the chorus. The song "Has Been," is an amusing take on Rawhide, with Shatner facing off against whatever pencilneck fans might thinks he's sad. Shatner wins, noting that a "Has Been," is someone who "Might again," and that regardless, he's already accomplished more than many of them ever will...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great listening.., Oct 23 2004

The first time i heard this track was on the tonite show, it was great. Will sang the song common people, there arent many people who can sing like this, and make music like this. He is a great person. As soon as i heard this track i had to go out and buy it. It will be a great collection for your more contemporary kind of music. Ben folds five does some great music for will. So i suggest if you enjoy a soft easy voice with some good back round tunes, this album would be perfect.
