It's hard to say how much influence Matthew Fox's subsequent stardom on Lost may have impacted the decision to release Haunted to the home-video market some eight years after the fact, but fans of this short-lived TV series (the two-disc set includes 11 episodes, only 7 of which were aired in 2002 prior to the show's cancellation by UPN) are thrilled. And why not? Even if it doesn't always live up to its intriguing premise, Haunted, which suggests what The Sixth Sense might have been like as a murder mystery, has enough going for it to sustain interest throughout this, its one and only season. Fox plays Frank Taylor, a former police detective in Los Angeles whose young son was kidnapped one night two years earlier while he and his wife Jessica (Lynn Collins), an assistant district attorney, were in the other room. It was straight downhill from there; Frank lost his gig, then his marriage, and then very nearly his life when, at work as a private investigator, he was attacked by an especially vicious bad guy (whom Frank then killed). "But I came back," Frank says. "And the dead came with me." Indeed, he now sees all manner of ghosts, who are in some kind of purgatory between this world and the next. Some indirectly help him solve crimes; others, including Simon, the bad guy from the pilot (played by John Mann), do exactly the opposite. And they tend to appear at inopportune times, leading those around him, not to mention Frank himself, to question his sanity (ironically, he checks himself in to an asylum in the final episode in order to solve a case).

With its dark, moody, stylish look, Haunted certainly has a vibe. But while there are some compelling episodes (like "Nocturne," in which Frank is possessed by the ghost of another cop, and "Simon Redux," which offers a surprising revelation about the dead villain), it loses its momentum when Frank veers from his principal purpose--namely, figuring out what happened to his son, who may still be alive. And although the ghosts provide some genuinely scary moments, the effect wears off after several episodes, exposing the show's weaker elements, which include some stock characters, less-than-stellar acting, and obvious, clunky writing. Still, this DVD release gives the show a well-deserved second chance. --Sam Graham

From the Studio

After having a near-death experience, ex-cop-turned-private-eye Frank Taylor learns that he has the ability to see and communicate with restless ghosts of murdered people who ask for his help in solving their deaths.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Haunted" still haunts me!, Feb 8 2011
This review is from: Haunted: The Complete Series (DVD)
I'm happy that Amazon carries this series, as it is extremely hard to find and is one if not THE best work Matthew Fox ever did. I had spent years earlier trying to get my hands on this so when it was released in 2010 I was hoping to get if easily. Amazon came to my rescue as I couldn't locate in any video store I tried in two provinces and I was excited that Amazon.ca carried this so I wouldn't have to get it from the U.S. I prefer buying in Canada so am always happy when I find what I need here.

This series better suited for DVD as the plotlines can be reviewed over and over, without annoying commercials. I was very happy with the whole product, wish that they had gotten interviews with the cast and crew however. Also any kind of information on who came up with the idea would have been great to include in the DVD package.

This TV show was even better when I viewed it the second time around. It was and still is one of the most scary shows ever created. Other shows of this genre are good but none as well done as this one was and frankly it was a pity it was cancelled; I rate it as one of my absolute favorite TV shows of all time.

I'm still wishing that this series had been carried out to the end and fully resolved before it was cancelled, but am happy that it was finally released.

I'd like to see more series like this one and as soon as Amazon comes out with "Brimstone" then that will be the next series I'm getting and I will checking out what else they might have in the way of earlier favorites of mine!

4.0 out of 5 stars Matthew Fox, Mar 12 2012
This review is from: Haunted: The Complete Series (DVD)
I bought this DVD because I thought it was a good deal and I liked Matthew Fox. Once I started watching it, I had deja vu. I had seen this when it was on T.V. years ago, but I never saw the whole series. This is another case cancelling a good series wiithout proper warning. You feel let down because there is no finality to the series, you are left hanging and wanting more. I still liked the series despite the ending. The storyline was really interesting.....maybe this series came out before it's time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunted - The Complete Series - MATTHEW FOX, Mar 30 2010
By P. D. A. WALDER "Paul Walder" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: NEW Haunted (DVD) (DVD)
I have been waiting for this fantastic series starring Matthew Fox for the last eight years to be released on DVD!!!

Matthew plays Police Officer Frank Taylor who has the perfect job and family until his son is abducted leading to his life, career and marriage destroyed. He becomes a Private Investigator specialising in missing and abducted children cases.

Frank's life is changed forever while trying to aprehend Simon a man linked to several child abductions. A fatal clash leaves Simon dead and Frank in a critical condition. As Doctors try to save his life, Frank has a near death experience in which he sees his missing son. When he regains consciousness, he finds that the dead can communicate with him and help him in his work to solve cases. However Simon and other dead people use his new abilities to intentionally mislead or harm him.

I live in the UK and one of my TV channels Zone Horror has just showed 11 episodes, it was shown on Sky in 2003. However I am hoping that the Complete Series on two DVD's contains the episode not shown, a Christmas episode called It's A Wonderful Afterlife.

5.0 out of 5 stars He brought the dead back with him, April 26 2010

I almost passed this one by on a cable marathon due to the generic title. Reminds me a little of the Ghost Whisperer but with a more dark gritty edge to it. Frank is a ex-cop turned detective who lost his child and marriage. While on a case he dies and is then brought back, to the ghosts he's like a human glow stick. All eleven episodes are excellent with great acting, writing and direction. Like other great shows this one was canceled too soon. At least they didn't leave us with a cliff hanger so you won't feel like you were left hanging. Don't let the title fool you this is top notch television. For bargain hunters this is available at Walmart for under 20 bucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars How on earth did I miss this series first run?, April 17 2010

Bought this series just to take a chance as I am a die hard Matthew Fox fan. I really don't have words for how creative the conception, filming and writing really are. This a series dead before it's time. Great story telling, a few truly spooky moments and some surprise guest stars (Pauly Perette pre NCIS) make it more than worth the price. If Matthew ever decides to come back to TV after LOST, I hope his clout convinces the powers that be to bring this on back.
