Book Description

Aug. 4 2008 Women of the Otherworld (Book 5)
Eve Levine—half-demon, black witch, and devoted mother—has been dead for three years. She has a great house, an interesting love life, and can't be killed again—which comes in handy when you've made as many enemies as Eve has. Yes, the afterlife isn't too bad. All she needs to do is find a way to communicate with her daughter, Savannah, and she'll be happy.

But fate—or more exactly, the Fates—have other plans. Eve owes them a favor, and they've just called it in. An evil spirit called the Nix has escaped from Hell. She feeds on chaos and death, and is very good at persuading people to kill for her. The Fates want Eve to hunt her down before she does any more damage, but the Nix is a dangerous enemy—previous hunters have been driven insane in the process. As if that's not problem enough, the only way to stop her is with an angel's sword. And Eve is no angel.

Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Smart-mouthed Eve Levine, a witch with a reputation for breaking the rules, may be dead, but as she proves in this overstuffed paranormal romance (a follow-up to Industrial Magic), she can still raise hell in the hereafter—which, in this case, is a curiously ordinary dimension in which ghosts like Eve and her also deceased former lover, a sorcerer named Kris, can bicker, have sex and use their paranormal powers. The Fates, three elusive sisters, are the rulers of this otherworldly dimension, and they have a job for Eve. If she can defeat a demonic Nix who's wreaking havoc in the human realm by inducing people to kill, she'll earn her wings—literally. The catch: she can't capture the Nix without the powers that angelhood affords. Eve surmounts this hurdle by teaming up with a hunky and humanlike angel named Trsiel, but her quest, which is fraught with obstacles as well as unnecessary distractions, is lengthy and meandering. In addition, Eve's kick-butt-ask-questions-later attitude, while amusing, can be wearying, and the rules of Armstrong's alternate world seem conveniently changeable. Still, those who appreciate heroines with a good measure of spunk, sass and strong-arm savvy will find this a fun if fitful read.

Review

"Armstrong has created a persuasive, finely detailed other-worldly cosmology — featuring sorcery, astral projection, spells, telepathy and teleportation."
Toronto Star

"Those who appreciate heroines with a good measure of spunk, sass and strong-arm savvy will find this a fun if fitful read."
Publishers Weekly

"Mesmerizing . . . the 'other-worldly' atmosphere conjured up by Armstrong begins to seem strangely real. Armstrong is a talented and original writer whose inventiveness and sense of the bizarre is arresting."

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book.... but not Fantastic March 8 2013
By A. Soares TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I liked this book, but it was my least favourite of the Otherworld series for several reasons:

1) Savannah is not my favourite character. I love Elena, learned to like Paige, dislike Jaime, and am so-so on Savannah (as the main voice - I liked her just fine in previous books).
2) Major cliffhanger. While the previous books in the Otherworld series are stand-alone stories, this is the first of a trilogy.
3) use of death to remove obstacle between Savannah and long-time crush Adam.

Obviously if you are a long-time Otherworld follower you must read this book, but I wouldn't start here if I were you. Buy it in paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great One July 5 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Again, Kelley Armstrong amazed me with this book. It was even better then the last one. This serie, for those unfamiliar, deals with the lives of real, modern witches, werewolves, demons, vampires and such. It is well written, interesting and I am surprised it is not more popular.
If you want some great reading about the supernatural, these books are for you.
This particular book deals with Eve, a witch that is now a ghost. She goes on a quest for the Fates. I won't say much more except : Awsome!

5.0 out of 5 stars A bit of everything July 7 2005

Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is my favorite book so far in the series. It has a bit of everything. For those that haven't read any books by Kelley Armstrong yet, what are you waiting for?? She has developed a world far superior than any other "supernatural" series I've read. I just wish there were more books, it looks like her next one isn't set to be released until next year. I definately recommend the entire series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling! June 4 2013
Format:Paperback
I didn't know this book was part of a series, but I had a hunch. I read this book first but absolutely LOVED it. I couldn't put it down. Great cast of characters, it's thrilling and entertaining. I've decided to read the entire otherworld series, starting with Bitten-Looks fantastic. Kelley Armstrong is a great author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not My Favourite In the Series, But Still Good Aug. 6 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've always wanted an Otherworld story from Savannah's point of view. From the moment we met her and learned of her parents, I always wanted to see what it would be like to grow up with that legacy, with the conflict of knowing what you're capable of but not being able to do anything about it. So I was very excited to learn the last three books in the series would all be narrated by Savannah.

As a new woman of the Otherworld, I found Savannah to be not as great as I'd hoped. Perhaps because she's a bit whiny at the beginning, wanting to run her own investigation assignment. Perhaps because she's so eager to prove herself she takes dumb risks. I'm not sure if this is the fault of my expectations, or if she's a disappointing character. Perhaps I'm just not sympathetic to risk-taking twenty-somethings.

I loved the mystery in WAKING THE WITCH. I wasn't sure whodunnit until the very end. I love it when mysteries build up so that the outcome could go one of two ways.

With regards to the hot guys, I was very sad for Savannah. She was on the right track, getting involved with someone else, trying to forget about her school-girl crush, Adam. And then it doesn't work out. I wasn't too happy about this-- I wanted it to work out-- but I think the point of WAKING THE WITCH may be to see Savannah take risks, make mistakes and grow up.

I also loved that we were back to learning more about the witches' culture. Though their magic may not be as flashy as other races in the Otherworld, and the coven women can be quite catty, I think they're the most understated race, so it was nice to see them in action again.

WAKING THE WITCH is a great start to the final three books in the Otherworld series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kristof and Eve-their story March 18 2010

HAUNTED (Women of the Otherworld #5) by Kelley Armstrong

HAUNTED is the 5th novel in Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series. Haunted, told from varying POVs, focuses on Eve Levine and Kristof Nash-Savannah's recently deceased parents. As both a witch and a demon, Eve has been summoned by the Fates to take down the Nix. Calling in a favor for saving Lucas and Page, the Fates demand that Eve pay up.

As a ghost, Eve is unable to communicate with Savannah, and the frustration continues when she secretly looks in from time to time on Paige and Lucas, ensuring that Savannah is all right. But making sure her daughter is protected has come at a price.

Nix is a demi-demon who thrives on chaos. Inhabiting the bodies of people on the cusp of a kill, the demi-demon pushes the people to murder, thereby ensuring chaos reigns. On the run after an escape from hell, the Nix is making trouble in the human realm and the Fates have ordered Eve to locate and eradicate the Nix. But trouble continues to follow Eve as the Nix now endeavors to locate those closest to exact retribution. All is not lost when an Angel offers his aid-and with the help of Trsiel, Eve will be reborn into something she never expected or dreamed.

HAUNTED is another fascinating storyline from the mind of Kelley Armstrong. We will meet Eve throughout the series, culminating in the final novel THIRTEEN. Even Trsiel will make a few more appearances. One may wonder why Kelley introduces various characters and storylines throughout the series, but all will be answered in the final instalment of THIRTEEN

They are so supernatural and normal in the same time about their hopes and feelings... And she writes really well. It's nice to see them criss-cross in every story.
