I am a huge Clint Eastwood fan and own most of his films on DVD. Now I am replacing my favourites with Bluray. This is a great set at an excellent price. Well worth purchasing.

Mixed Video Quality / Very Good Audio June 17 2011
By Cincinnati Dan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase
Please describe the audio and video quality of any Blu-Ray you review. Thanks to those who do this.

Both movies have DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtracks, which are very good.

Video quality varied throughout the movies. Firefox started out very good, and had a lot of very good parts, but some parts were grainy. The flying scenes at the end were, unfortunately, grainy. Heartbreak Ridge also had some very good parts, and some grainy parts. Video quality in these two movies wasn't great, but mostly good.

Overall, these are pretty good movies, and I'm not terribly disappointed with the video quality. I'm satisfied with this purchase.

pleasing July 10 2011

I have always been a huge fan of Firefox, lumping it in with Hunt for Red October for my "superior Russian tech we must steal" flicks. I was surprised at out crisp the blu-ray transfer is and really enjoyed watching it for the first time in a few years.

The sound design/mix is of particular interest to me - the soundscape they engineered for this film is exceptional. At no time during the plane visual effects sequences do you feel like you are listening to a post-produced "mix" - it registers as very real for me, which is great because the model effects don't always hold up as I would like them to.

Great price point and two movies to boot (still have to check out Heartbreak Ridge). Enjoy!

2 movies, 2 discs June 8 2011

I'm happy to report that the somewhat misleading use of the term "2 movie set", while true, is less informative than '2 Disc Set'. Yes indeed this is a 2 disc set, not '1' as widely speculated prior to release (also shown as '1 disc' on Amazon's product page).

Firefox bluray Feb. 15 2013
By Steve Kram - Published on Amazon.com

As for the Firefox movie it's a great movie and so is Heartbreak Ridge. It's better quality over the old copy I have and as for the sound well let's just say it's not really 5.1DDS. It's better than the original 2chnl dvd with better picture quality. So yes it is better..! If your that much of a stickler for sound and picture quality then don't buy this. But if you want better than vhs or old dvd then buy it and I bet you'll like it over the old original old stuff.
I love these movies and Firefox was a great movie and still is..

Firefox / Heartbreak Ridge (Two-Movie Collection) [Blu-ray] on BR Oct. 26 2014
By Steve Douglas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Blu-ray
Unfortunately, most of Clint Eastwood's films transferred to Blu Ray have been disappointments in the area of video and audio quality. The version of Heartbreak Ridge in the 35 Years Collection was horrible with many dropouts, video stalls and artifacts. Firefox was not even included in that collection. There are already a great many reviews here providing a summary of the plots, opinions on acting, etc. Therefore, this review will only focus upon the actual quality of the transfers to Blu Ray.
Keep in mind that the quality of what you see and hear also depends upon the quality of TV monitor you are using and its accompanying home theater processor and speakers. I have a pretty high end, esoteric system and am judging the Blu Ray off of that.

Good to know that both of these films come on two separate discs so compressing two movies onto one disc is not an issue. I think when I review each film separately, you will notice some redundancy in my observations.

Firefox
VIDEO QUALITY....
I didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised by the transfer to Blu Ray. The video was clean throughout with no artifacts, no dirt nor dropouts. There was some noticeable grain which really could only be seen during the sky scenes and the jet flights. The grain was not really there in the close up and indoor scenes. Coloration was pretty decent and warmly colored with a slight over coloration on skin tones. It strongly appears to me that they crushed the blacks during many of the scenes blocking out small detailing. While the blacks go fairly deep, IMO, they crushed them too much. Mbps rate generally averaged in the mid twenties.

AUDIO QUALITY....
Unlike many of Eastwood's films on Blu Ray that came with a lossy codec, this movie comes with a DTS HD MA 5.1 audio codec. I found the audio levels to be lower than most Blu Rays so I just upped the remote volume and all was fine. Most dialogue was easy to understand and fairly transparent. The large majority of the audio is steered towards the front stage but when the rears are called for they provide an immersive environment. However, there is little steering for discreet audio and panning is kept to a minimum. Your LFE channel gets to work with the jet scenes but there is little call for it elsewhere.

EXTRAS...Not much to speak of...a trailer and a commentary which I have not listened to.

Heartbreak Ridge
VIDEO QUALITY....
Mbps rate averaged between the mid twenties and low thirties. Once again, a surprisingly clean transfer free of artifacts, dirt and other crap that was clearly seen on the Standard DVD version released with the 35 Years, 35 Films Eastwood Collection which was as badly produced as any I have ever had and did return it. My review of that collection can be found there with very large numbers of comments as a result if you care to go take a look. Once again, color grading is pretty natural with only skin tones tanned up a bit. And, once again, in many scenes, blacks are crushed a hair too much. Never the less, this Blu Ray version is far superior in quality than any previous releases of this film.

AUDIO QUALITY
Here was another surprise for me as this film also used a lossless DTS HD MA 5.1 codec and, even more surprising, there were a great number of discreet channeling to the left and right front surrounds as well as some usage of the rear surrounds. Had to bring up the overall volume as I did with Firefox but the dialogue was perfectly clear and transparent. The LFE channel goes deep in a few of the final fight scenes as well.

EXTRAS....None other than a movie trailer.

All in all, I believe that this collection of Firefox and Heartbreak Ridge is about the best you are going to get for either of these two films. While audio does not make great use of foley steering, it is still pretty good and to get a clean video copy for either film was pleasantly surprising.

I do hope that this review has been of some help to you in deciding your purchase.
Thanks for reading.
