1850. Lucy, a pampered New Englander, is dragged by her husband and cold-hearted brother-in-law on a wagon train bound for California. The first casualty of the arduous trek is her husband. Lucy longs to return home, but that would mean abandoning her little stepson. How fortunate then that rugged Clint Palance, a former trapper and Indian scout, is watching over them both! As the journey progresses, Lucy faces deprivation, heartache, hardship, and more death. Then, with California just around the bend, Lucy must part from Clint. Will she find him again? Or must she return to a dull life in Boston, forsaking forever the beautiful West she has grown to love?

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time - Don't Waste Your Money Aug 7 2012

I am amazed by the other reviews. For me, this is one of the dumbest books I've ever read. The characters were corney, not believable and had major personality changes at the turn of a page. The heroine, Lucy was an indecisive, handwringing twit who goes from adoring wife of her handsome husband to being attracted to the "sexy frontier man," Clint. Shortly after her husband's convenient death Lucy is having a roll in the hay with old Clint, their sexual encounter sounding as if it was written by an overly hormonal teenage girl.....I actually burst out laughing in the midst of it. Lucy's brother in law, Abner was the most ridiculous character of all. He started out as the rather grim religious zealot but turned into an abusive, stalker of women, groping pervert and finally a demented rapist by the end of the book. Totally unbelievable and almost an insult to our intelligence. The ending when it finally came was abrupt as if the author too, was sick of these people and wanted to be done with it. For that I was thankful.
If you truly enjoy historical fiction about women traveling west in the 1800's read something well written with great character development like: The Jubilee Trail (Gwen Bristow) or Pastora (Joanna Barnes)

3.0 out of 5 stars Had potential but... April 3 2012

I enjoy reading novels about women and the westward migration but didn't finish this book. It started out fine but I got too annoyed with inconsistencies in the story during the trip out west. For instance, the main character is supposedly devoted to her little stepson and responsible for his care but she's always going here and there and the kid is rarely mentioned. I gave it up altogether, however, when the author decided to throw in the standard issue romance novel sex scene, which was out of place in this story. As it was common knowledge amongst the travelers that there is no privacy or secrets on the wagon train and our heroine was also under close scrutiny by her zealot BIL, it seems implausible that she would get intimately involved in one of the wagons with a fellow traveler. So I guess the story is probably ok but I won't be spending any more reading time to find out how it ends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great historical romantic read Dec 23 2010

A life-long reader of historical romance expects certain things from a book: well-researched historical facts; dialog typical of the period; general attitudes of society within that era; plot surprises and characters one likes and dislikes. Shirley Kennedy delivers. I thoroughly enjoyed her "Heartbreak Trail." One could almost feel the trail dust sifting onto the characters, the rain pouring through the canvas tops of the wagons, and the back pain from all the work associated with the wagon train's trek westward. Their destination? Gold. Men left civilization behind to travel to where it was rumored gold nuggets lined the streets as well as the banks of streams. Lucy is swept along against her wishes by a cold husband and his maniacal, religious zealot brother. Her story of grit and survival is testament to all woman of that era who made the trip out west. I highly recommend this book.
