With no means to support herself, Ellie Kilmer agrees to work as a housekeeper for the young widower who lives on Dillon Island, hopeful she can obtain a proper reference. When a marriage of convenience is offered, Ellie is initially humiliated. Though she is past the age most women marry, she has more pride than to agree to his outlandish suggestion. From the Back Cover

Two people in desperate circumstances.
One unlikely proposal.

Life has left few choices for Elvira Kilmer. Her hopes for marriage and a family of her own have long since passed her by, and her arrival on Dillon's Island, nestled in the Susquehanna River, is not of her choosing, either. She needs work. And Jackson Smith needs a housekeeper.

Yet Ellie never imagined the widower would be so young...so handsome.

Jackson, on the other hand, has never met anyone quite so...plain. But he quickly comes to realize that Ellie's presence may solve his own problems--both the rearing of his young boys and the scandal that surrounds his first marriage.

When Jackson offers her something quite out of the ordinary, will Ellie look beyond mere necessity and risk opening her heart?

5.0 out of 5 stars An unlikely marriage proposal May 6 2010

Elvira "Ellie" Kilmer never expected widower Jackson Smith to be so young and handsome. When she takes the job of housekeeper for the widow and his two young sons, Ellie's heart is drawn to the heart broken little boys, but she is not prepared for the unlikely proposal of marriage that Jackson gives to her. Frustrated that he would use her plain looks and reduced circumstances as a reason to safely propose, Ellie tries to see the Lord's hand at work in this awkward circumstance. Could God really be giving her the desire of her heart, a desire for a home and family of her own?

Hearts Awakening takes us to Pennsylvania in the 1840's. The story takes place on a small island in the middle of the Susquehanna River. The seclusion of the island and the life in the apple orchard gives the perfect backdrop to this novel. It is a story of truth, second chances, forgiveness, family and love. I appreciated the way that Delia Parr led me through the complications of the plot line, giving the backstory slowly, so that I could feel the frustration of the characters as they try to sort out the past and make way for the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and understated Mar 24 2010

Every once in a while you come across a tolerable romance. But rarely is the romance between the most unlikely people. It's even less likely that the romance isn't just nauseating. "Hearts Awakening" weaves a lightly developed romance unexpected of the circumstance. Having just buried his wife, Jackson Smith is only looking for a housekeeper for his young boys. Ellie, plainer than most women, just needs a job. They each discover their belonging and place within an unconventional family. Gently allowing each character the space to grow, Delia Parr draws the reader in, hoping and anticipating a happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Mar 24 2010

Without giving away any plot lines of Hearts Awakening, let me just say, this book was amazing. This is historical Christian romance at its best. I will definitely be seeking out more of author, Delia Parr's work to read because I was so impressed with this book.

The storyline's are wonderfully written and so descriptive that I felt I was right there in each scene, like a fly on the proverbial wall. As with many books I have read of late, I was very happy with the underlying faith message that came through loud and clear....even when we are going through a trial that we don't think we should be, or life does not seem like its going the way we want it to, we have to remember God is in control through all of it! We just have to trust and obey!

Throughout this book, I was also reminded that forgiveness is key to our faith in God and in our relationships here on earth. If we cannot forgive, we will be bitter and God does not want us to be bitter, He wants us joyful as we do His work here on earth.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!
