The musical Rent is said to have revived the rock musical in the 1990s, but it's Hedwig and the Angry Inch that could revive the genre's movie fortunes in the new millennium. Adapted and directed from Stephen Trask's music and lyrics by John Cameron Mitchell, who also reprises the lead role of Hedwig, the flamboyantly unlucky victim of a botched sex-change operation, this is as good as a rock musical gets.

The soundtrack follows the cast album pretty faithfully, except that the whole thing somehow feels turbocharged. Fast numbers like "Angry Inch" (with fab backup vocals by Miriam Shor) and "Exquisite Corpse" rock harder; ballads like "The Long Grift" and "Midnight Radio" are more poignant. The original off-Broadway cast recording was good, but now everything feels sharper, better defined. Even Hedwig's backing band, the Angry Inch, is beefed up by exHüsker Dü Bob Mould on guitar, while Girls Against Boys contribute to "Freaks," a track that would be right at home on an old David Bowie album. Even your punk pals will approve when they catch you listening to this musical. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5.0 out of 5 stars JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL IS A GENIUS!! Jun 22 2004

... as well as Stephen Trask and the entire cast of the Angry Inch. The songs are very profound, the lyrics touch one's soul and let you travel into a story that is sad, funny, real, compelling. I would recommend the Soundtrack CD as well as the Original Cast CD to anyone in need of some real Head! John Cameron Mitchell is a true genius!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wam Bam Thank you Man April 9 2004

Many say that this movie touched them inpropriatly in many ways, and raped their minds. The soundtrack kicks even more ass. "Orgin of Love" still makes me cry myself to sleep like a little boy after 10 shots of bourbon. The Hedwig cult lives on.

5.0 out of 5 stars I JUST HAD TO SAY.... Mar 27 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the best musical to come off an Off-Broadway stage in a long long time. I just have no words to say what this rock musical, movie, and both soundtracks mean to me. MIDNIGHT RADIO is one of the best rock ballads of all time and for that, I continually thank Stephen Trask for his gift of this music. I'm listening to it now and that's what prompted me to write....

If you appreciate imaginative and artistic music and musical theatre; if you're open minded and a supporter of self-expression - you should not hesitate to expand your music and video library to include all the pieces of the Hedwig collection.

I know some people prefer the raw sound of the musical theater sountrack, but I prefer the polished vocals and tight musicianship that appears on the movie soundtrack. Both feature John, Stephen and Miriam signing, but the movie soundtrack has removed some of the rough edges that are common in musical theater soundtracks. Sometimes the rough edges are good - such as in Rent, or The Wiz, or Hair. I have both Hedwig albums, and the movie soundtrack is played more regularly in my home than the theater sountrack.... but both are very good.

Perhaps I should go dust off my yellow foam wig.... I'm feeling a little Hedish....enjoy!
