5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!, Dec 15 2001
By Anna (Gilroy, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heir (Paperback)
Arabella, a teen barely 18, has a diffuclt choice to make, either marry the man her father had picked, or don't marry and is kicked out of the estate. She makes her decision very difficult but she decides to marry Justin. They start off very shaky at the beginning but then Arabella decides to marry. It was then Justin thought that she was cheating on him. He makes the wedding a living hell. Arabella had no idea what made Justin so mad.
Later on, Justin realized that she never had cheated on him and he was sorry for making that realization. At the end, they live happily. In this book there was a lot of deceit and mistrust. People also got hurt. Please read this book. It will bring thoughts into your head and lessons that are worth thousands of words.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 only because the plot wasn't romantic, Oct 3 2001
This review is from: Heir (Paperback)
First of all, I agree that rape really shouldn't enter the romance story world. You read a romance to get away from the grime of the real world and what happens? the heroine gets raped by the hero. That was my main irritation.

Other than that, I was really annoyed at Justin's stubborn refusal to believe Arabella, and he never really apologizes for his callousness--he's too proud. That miffed me.

But being miffed by a story isn't always bad. There was definitely passion in the characters and the story, and this being my first Catherin Coulter book, it urged me to read her other novels. Really, none have matched this one in the raw emotion and power, but that might just be first love/impression. If you can get past the hero and heroine as cousins (ick--they even look alike) and the other incest reference, as well as a thoroughly stuck-up array of characters, then I highly recommend this as a compelling read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Please give this book a chance, Aug 26 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Heir (Paperback)
This was my first Catherine Coulter novel so I have nothing to compare her work to, but I enjoyed it. I couldn't put it down! As for those who object to the "rape" scene, I was pretty repulsed too but I viewed it in the historical context. Just as the characters in Pride and Prejudice seem to live lives that center on gossip, natting, and parlour games, the way women were treated and how their very lives depended on "marrying well" is the whole point of Jane Austen's novel. I felt that the characters behaved pretty much like I would expect for that era. I actually thought that "Justin", the main, male character, was much nicer than some of the other heroes I've read about. Give this book a chance!

2.0 out of 5 stars I didn't particularly like it
The story was OK. I found the the characters rather unexciting. I think there was actually more passion between Arabella's mom and the doctor. It needed more heat!
