5.0 out of 5 stars Gayle and Anna had me swooning Jun 13 2012

It has been a while since a historical romance has captured me as thoroughly as The Heir. Too many times authors rush to consummate the relationship thinking that will prove that the characters are destined to be happily ever after but with The Heir you can actually see it happening one small intimacy at a time. There is no rush to the finish line just a slow build, a culmination of touches and thoughtful gestures between Gayle and Anna that makes you remember some of the reasons you may have fallen in love yourself a time or two. It is not always the grand gestures that win the fair maiden and Burrowes clearly shows us that with a book that I know I will reread again and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing but a bit long Mar 13 2012
By Secret Romance Junkie TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
4.5 stars really.

When I started this book I was immediatly entranced by the way it was written. You learn more about the characters through their actions and their words than through long drawn out descriptions of their thoughts. Quite refreshing really. The chemistry between the two people develops nicely and has you truely rooting for them. I liked the hero's verbal expression of his passion. It left no doubt as to the depth of his involvement.

Where this book lost a star with me was in the last 50-100 pages. If he had just told her he loved her, you could have easily knocked 50 pages off the book. That particular plot device felt contrived. Also, the grand secret that Anna was hiding didn't really require secrecy. If she had shared, Gayle could have helped her.

Overall the book is well written. The characters are likable. The secondary characters are interesting and provide a nice foil to H/H.
