It's been a long time since we've seen a great "western" type of movie or series. AMC's 'Hell on Wheels' certainly delivers. The show is about the construction of the Union Pacific railroad shortly after the end of the Civil War. The writers, workers and actors have created a show that makes the viewer forget that they are in their living rooms. Quite impressive!

Of particular note is rapper, now actor, Common, a delight as Elam Ferguson. As is Colm Meaney, brilliant as the railroad tycoon, Thomas Durant. Looking forward to season 2...

I want to love this program. Even after two seasons, I still want to love this program. The sets are fantastic, costumes, casting, props, locations, and the like, but, and this is a but of the huge variety, this show is very poorly written. The dialog is great. The story is absent. It has taken two seasons for a guy, attractive but lacking in the standard human attributes like the ability to talk and share feelings, laugh, cry, do pretty much anything other than brood like a sociopath who thinks brooding will help him fit in with the feeling folk, shows up in a town to kill some dude who would have been a more interesting main character. Then, with a couple of increasingly annoying Irish boys, a pretty yet dead-inside blond straight out of Mad Men, two quite interesting yet tragically underused and eventually dead older men, the main character hangs around. Also, there is an interesting black man who is awkwardly inserted into the action, awkwardly because it wasn't enough to establish early on that this black man and this white man have racial and political tension but are feeling each other out, as time goes on. No, it has to be pointed out pretty much constantly. Rather than getting a full picture of the relegated-to-a-stock-black-guy black guy, played as brilliantly as possible by Common, given the terrible writing and his massive talent, we get a stunning picture of just how much the main guy doesn't know what to say or do around a black guy. Also, no, I can't remember his name, he's that dull, though Anson Mount, the actor, is good in other projects he's worked on so you can't blame him for bad writing. The story doesn't so much "get old" as it never really gets off the ground. He was hunting the men who killed his wife, in the pilot. I guess he lost interest. Come to think of it, so did I.Read more ›

Hell on Wheels has it all: Drama, Action, History, Fine Acting, and Great Cinematography.
There are those who may fine fault with some of the aspects of this series, but not I. I rate it a 10, and thoroughly recommend it.

If you're shy about the violence and greed that underpins the history of the "civilization" of the West, this story isn't for you. If you're a Clint Eastwood fan, Anson Mount will grab you. Well written plots and fabulous characters.

A great series - be sure to watch about four episodes before making your decision on this one! I was turned off by the first episode but the more I watched, the more hooked I was. Great acting!

This is a very good depiction of the times around when the railroad was being laid. I like old fashion movies and westerns. The actors are good!

I watched all the episodes in two evenings. I ordered season two by the time I watched episode 6. The characters were not quite as intriguing as those portrayed in "Deadwood" but close. Cullen's backstory propelled the plot forward at a breakneck pace. I found the series very entertaining.
