By THE MOVIE GUY HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on Feb. 8 2015
Format: DVD
The film opens up with the characters sitting cleverly in a "Last Supper" pose. They are introduced grindhouse style which was awkwardly inserted into the opening credits. Our group of exorcists come from various religious backgrounds. They maintain themselves in a state ready for damnation in case they must entice a demon for self possession followed by a quick suicide. Our holy men swear profusely, drink, do drugs, engage in adultery, homosexuality, and gluttony. In a Ghostbusters plot steal, they are attempting to save NYC and the world from the apocalypse while fitting eviction. They ride public transportation.

The film outline is great. However it lacked decent dialog under all the swearing which grows old. The climax scene couldn't bring it together and lacked the entertainment value of earlier scenes. I kept imagining how well this could have been as a Coen brothers' film with Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Woody Harrelson, Zach Galifianakis, Winona Ryder, Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen, and James Franco.

Parental Guide: Excessive swearing. Photo nudity.

Not worth the money, bad acting and almost to the point were it is boring, good concept but the story line is horrible.

Unique horror-comedy that does not disappoint Feb. 18 2014
By Matthew Scott Baker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Blu-ray
The concepts of demonic possession and exorcisms fascinate me, which partially explains why I like horror movies so much. As any horror buff can tell you, hundreds, if not thousands, of films about these subjects have been made over the years. But, as such, few have come up with concepts as unique as the one from HELLBENDERS. The idea of exorcists who have to kill themselves in order to take demons back to Hell is very original. And as you will see in this horror-comedy, it is also very intense and entertaining.

Before I begin this review, I must warn you up front: if movies like DOGMA offended you, then do not watch HELLBENDERS. The subject matter is slightly similar, as is the language and coarseness throughout. But if you found DOGMA hilarious like I did, then you’re in for a real treat; HELLBENDERS is a riotous blast with humorous characters and an intriguing plot.

The film is shot well and looks great, both from a 2D and 3D aspect. Many films use 3D in an attempt to draw an audience, regardless of whether it enhances the experience or not. But HELLBENDERS uses 3D to its advantage and creates a more immersive atmosphere for the viewer. As a result, the entertainment value skyrockets when you watch it in this format.

Likewise, the acting is excellent as well. I particularly enjoy seeing Clancy Brown onscreen; I’ve been a fan of his work since I first saw him way, way back in 1984, in THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION. Over the years, this guy has played so many different parts in so many different types of film and television that it’s hard to tie him to a specific genre. This diversity highlights his talent as an actor and brings more credibility to each role he undertakes. Clifton Collins Jr. does a great job as well, and I would be remiss if I did not mention him.

Gore-hounds will be glad to hear there is a nice dose of carnage in HELLBENDERS as well. Although the special effects look good, I do wish there had been more gore throughout the film, particularly when the demon is biting off noses and fingers. I think some nice arterial sprays would have made the 3D effects look even more vibrant. This is not a complaint, but more of a personal opinion. My sole grievance with the film is that some of the demonic effects used on people are a bit generic. I say ‘some’ because several of them look great…but a little more originality would have been nice overall.

HELLBENDERS is a lot of fun, though, and I highly recommend giving it a look. The film has laughs, gore, demons, and intensity…what more can you ask for in a horror-comedy? Give this one a look, and be sure to check it out in 3D if you can. The Blu-ray contains a couple of nice Special Features, including an audio commentary with the director, a couple of behind-the-scenes featurettes, and more. The movie hits store shelves today.

uhholy funny March 10 2014

I'm a Roman Catholic but I Do like my funny - and in humor anything is fair game, and it was clear no "slam" was intended towards Catholics here - just having a good shot at all and so, I very much enjoyed the film. Some folks might get twerked a bit at the Opus Dei catholic group depicted here, but I see plenty of folks just like that in real life (and I am fairly devout) and they can be that moronic in the area of the demonic - like all things, depends on who you talk to. All that aside - a funny and fully irreverant film about these people who have more faith, than the twerps trying to shut them down - that is the big joke - they go to extremes for the sake of faith that the critics against them will - so if your humor is non-denominational - you will like this movie. The actors played their parts very well - script I felt was well thought out - make ups were good and not over the top comical - and a good roller coaster ride of a film.

Meh Nov. 1 2013

I usually love anything supernatural / occult, but this movie is choppy and incohesive, with repetitive and awkward dialog and a story that just doesn't hang together. Not quite bad enough to be good as a b-flick, and definitely not good enough to just be good.

Terrible Nov. 2 2013
By Ecologist - Published on Amazon.com

I rarely comment on movies feeling I lack training to be anything other than a personal critic. However, there were only 3 reviews at the time I rented it and the film was terrible. Potential renters may be looking for additional reviews. Hellbenders is erratic, poorly scripted and staged, and the effects are amateurish. Out of hundreds of films we've rented, this, and one other, we actually just turned off and absorbed the cost, which was higher because it is a "pre-release." The story line has great potential (exorcists who must maintain a high level of sinning to be certain they go to hell if they decide to serve as host for the demon possessing the victim they are exorcising - great potential for a comedic dimension to an otherwise traditionally dark and gory theme) and the trailer is convincing, but the film itself is terrible.
