Product Description

From Amazon.com

In Her Shoes just gets better and better as it goes along. As adapted by Erin Brockovich screenwriter Susannah Grant, this is one of those rare movies that actually improves on its source material (Jennifer Weiner's "chick lit" bestseller), with thoughtful direction by Curtis Hanson, the L.A. Confidential Oscar®-winner who approaches any chosen genre with Hawksian versatility. At first it seems like Weiner's novel might yield a standard melodrama of sibling rivalry, but the polar opposition of smart, plain-looking Philadelphia lawyer Rose (the always-excellent Toni Collette) and her sexy, illiterate, irresponsible sister Maggie (Cameron Diaz) is just the starting point. In Her Shoes becomes a moving, richly developed character study that deals with painful loss, long-term guilt, negative self-image, and the discovery of a heretofore unknown grandmother named Ella (played with delicate nuance by Shirley MacLaine), whose re-entry into the sisters' lives sets the stage for the well-earned emotions of a satisfying reconciliation. As Maggie takes stock of her dismal life while staying with Ella at a Florida "retirement home for active seniors," Hanson never condescends to these likable characters, and never goes for the easy laughs in a setting that could have devolved into Cocoon-like comedy. The movie's all the more endearing for treating its male characters (played by Mark Feuerstein, Ken Howard, and Richard Burgi) with equal depth and sympathy, further enhancing a classy tearjerker that viewers of both genders can thoroughly enjoy. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Directed by Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, Wonder Boys, L.A. Confidential) from a screenplay by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich), In Her Shoes has been hailed as “the most rewarding family comedy since Terms of Endearment” (New York Magazine).

Flirty, flaky party girl Maggie (Cameron Diaz) and plain, dependable lawyer Rose (Toni Collette) are sisters, best friends and bitter rivals who seem to have nothing in common but size 8½ feet and some family secrets. After a heart-rending falling out, they accidentally discover they also share a long-lost grandmother (Shirley MacLaine). Together they travel a bumpy road toward making peace with each other and themselves!

3.0 out of 5 stars two sisters learn to love each other and themselves, Oct 19 2007
This review is from: In Her Shoes (Widescreen) (DVD)
this is the story of two sisters who are polar opposites.Cameron Diaz
is Maggie Feller,a free spirited loopy party girl with no life
track.Toni Collette is rose,her older,wiser,career oriented sister.the
two clash about many things, especially Maggie's life style. They have a
major blowout and Maggie Disappears.Shirley MacLaine plays a prominent
role in the movie, and is responsible for getting the sisters back
together.of course before this happens both sisters must realize they
need each other and learn other life lessons along the way.once
reunited, they begin to understand each other and accept each other and
themselves.another feel good,"lets all love one another" movie.preachy
to be sure, but still entertaining.the life lessons the girls learn may
be deep and profound but the movie itself is not.and it is certainly
not original.this movie has been done ad infinitum and ad nauseum.but
for a fluff piece,it is okay. 3/5

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great movie!, April 1 2006
By
Kay (B.C. Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In Her Shoes (Full Screen) (DVD)
This movie is great! Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette are sisters trying to get along with one another, but they are exact opposites. Ultimately their love for each other brings them together. Their grandmother (played by Shirley MacLaine) is very funny and steals the movie! I loved the poem by E.E. Cummings so much I typed it on to a card and gave it to my husband for our anniversary! Definately buy this movie!
