Third Edition, Dec 23 2008
By J. Arsenault - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Herbaceous Perennial Plants: A Treatise on Their Identification, Culture, and Garden Attributes (Hardcover)
The 3rd edition, with Crocosmia on the cover, came out in hardback earlier this year, 2008. Make sure you don't inadvertently order an older edition. All the previous, positive reviews hold here - Armitages's wit and bountiful descriptions, growing information, etc., more species and cultivars. The color photos are in several places, as compared to the center. I bought the 2nd edition in paperback, used, and the photos and text pages are falling out. The 3rd has fewer but larger pages (1108); the font isn't as contrast-y. Unfortunately, the color in many of the photos looks muddy. Glad for the new one. Muddy photos not withstanding, it's a 5 in my book.

This book is in the same line of the Dirr manuals: authoritative, greatly detailed, and extensive.

I purchased this book as a gift for a friend who is a Master Gardener. It arrived quickly and in new condition. I have since learned more about the author and his excellent reputation as an authority on perennials. I chose this book for it's extensive coverage and the writing style which is personable and possessing a sense of humor and directness which has earned Dr. Armitage a loyal following in the horticulture world. It seems that it is enjoyable to read which can be a plus over what could be a stiff and dry reference resource. I also have great respect for his skills as a photographer and appreciate the excellent photos accompanying the plant descriptions. I have now purchased additional books by Dr. Armitage as gifts for others and would not hesitate to buy again as new editions become available.
