Book Description

Mar 6 2012
Marriage today isn't what it used to be: for better, not for worse. As same-sex weddings are becoming more common, the classic love-story happy ending is taking on a decidedly new twist, everyone has a fresh role to play, and supporters and opponents of gay marriage alike are finding themselves in the midst of a revolution that's redefining marriage--both as a personal choice and as an institution--as we know it.
In "Here Come the Brides!, " editors Audrey Bilger and Michele Kort gather together the voices of women taking part in--and shaping--this major historical shift. Representing a diversity of points of view in terms of race, class, ethnicity, and gender identification, this collection of essays, stories, and visual images takes a multidimensional look at how opening up the traditional order of "man and wife" to include the possibility of "wife and wife" is altering our social landscape. From wedding pictures and images of protest signs to comical anecdotes and sober philosophical analyses, "Here Come the Brides!" is an exploration of how the legalization of same-sex marriages has irrevocably changed the way lesbians think about their unions and their lives--and a celebration of the dream of lesbian happily-ever-afters.

This collection of essays, poems, plays, even cartoons encompasses both very personal and emotional stories about relationships as well as political and cultural commentary on gay marriage. I was completely engrossed in every story because the writing is superb and the stories are so genuine and heartfelt. I especially enjoyed reading about the two authors and their very different experiences. The book covers gay marriage from all angles, even those lesbians who choose not to marry. I appreciated that this book doesn't shy away from revealing marriage as a very complex issue for both gay and straight people. I honestly couldn't put it down which sort of surprised me. Mostly because one expects a collection like this to be rather strident in it's portrayal of lesbian marriage. Many might think this is just a book supporting gay marriage but it's a lot more than that. It is full of personal and political dramas that are never black or white. Highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Weddings! Dec 16 2012

Who doesn't love to read about weddings? Well, there may be some people, but I am not one of them. This nonfiction collection of wedding stories of women in love, out of love, married, divorced, is a reminder of the diversity of human experience and the power of love and hope. Some of the stories are funny, some sad, but the spirit of the women shines through in each. Now that same sex marriage is legal in more and more states, many people will be invited to lesbian weddings (I got to plan one as mother of a bride!), and this volume will help them immensely. It certainly exposed me to ideas and perspectives that I had not considered.
