Twenty-five years later, Olive cleans other people's houses to support her lazy, out-of-work husband and his ailing mother. Roz cannot show her kind, caring husband Manus any love because her philandering ex has left her trust in shreds. And she and Frankie have fallen out big time.
But Ven is determined to reunite her friends and realise the dream they had of taking a cruise before they hit forty. Before they know it, the four of them are far from home, on the high seas. But can blue skies, hot sun, and sixteen days of luxury and indulgence distract from the tension and loneliness that await their return?

Milly Johnson has yet to Disappoint!,
By
This review is from: Here Come the Girls (Paperback)
Milly Johnson's novels have never failed to plaster a smile on my face and Here Come the Girls was no exception. I grinned and giggled away through her latest delight.I loved all the characters in this novel and rooted for all four girls to sort their lives out in whatever way they needed to. Their problems were all so different and well portrayed that there wasn't one storyline I was more interested in over the others. I was eager to see what would happen with each woman and even though I might have found some of their endings predictable, I still cheered at final decisions and smiled through the epilogue. There were even a few surprises along the way. The four friends played off each other wonderfully. Not once did I get confused as to who was who or who was speaking. Their banter felt natural and realistic, as did their troubles and past hurts which mired their present situations. Having traveled on a couple of cruises as a young teenager, I've since harboured a love for them and have always wanted to get back on board. I thought Milly captured the cruising essence brilliantly. I was flooded with memories of being a silly teenager meeting new friends, seeing new places, relaxing on board, eating delectable multi-course meals and seeking first kisses. Don't worry, this book doesn't come over all Love Boat like, dripping with cheesy romance of kisses on the stern, which I admit, I was somewhat expecting with it being a cruise ship and all. Instead, love, life and romance stroll along at a leisurely pace throughout this gentle ride with friendship at the forefront. I will never stop reading Milly Johnson novels. Her uplifting, feel good stories leave a grin on my face and I adore spending time in the worlds she creates and with the characters I grow to love.

Good holiday read,
By Damaskcat - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Here Come the Girls (Paperback)
I really enjoyed A Spring Affair and A Summer Fling so I was looking forward to reading the author's next book. It was worth the wait. This is a really enjoyable romp of a book with the `feel good' factor in spades. Frankie, Roz, Olive and Ven have been friends since they were at school. Now it is Ven's fortieth birthday and she's won a cruise and wants to take her friends with her but Roz isn't speaking to Frankie because of an incident four years ago.At first it looks as though Olive won't be going on the cruise because she can't imagine that her invalid husband and mother-in-law will manage without her. Then she realises just in time that they aren't as incapable as she thought they were and she decides to go on the cruise and leave them a note saying she's gone. When Roz and Olive embark on the cruise ship - the Mermadia - they find Ven has also invited Frankie. Can the four friends resurrect their old friendship? Can they all solve the problems in their lives in the space of sixteen days? It is the humour of the writing and the well drawn characters which lift this author's books out of the ordinary. I felt sad when I'd read the last page and found myself wondering how all the characters were getting on after the end of the book. This would be an excellent book to read if you were on a cruise and I would recommend it to anyone as a holiday read.

If only I could afford a cruise...*sigh*,

Having read and enjoyed my first Milly Johnson Book ¡¥An Autumn Crush¡ I was really looking forward to reading another. The front covers of her books manage to catch my attention because they are always nice and bright and look inviting. This one was no different, only this time I didn¡t realise I would enjoy the book even more than the last one!In the beginning of the book we meet Ven, Olive and Roz. Three women that are complete opposites but are the best of friends. I immediately loved Olive and Ven but found myself disliking Roz. The story was so easy to pick up and I found myself immersed in the women¡s lives. Olive¡s lazy husband and hideous mother in law made for funny reading and Roz¡s husband Manus I adored, and immediately this made me dislike Roz even more. When the Olive and Roz are surprised by Ven with a trip of a lifetime, both of them are pretty surprised. Their dream of taking a cruise before they hit forty seems to finally be a reality. When Olive and Roz both agree, they are in for a shock when they realise that the forth member of their original gang from school is on the boat too. We meet Frankie later in the book but she was a brilliant character and it became apparent very early on that a lot of the issues were surrounding a past event. This made the book even more readable to have a major event affecting all the girls in different ways. By the end of the book, I loved all the women and the ending was absolute magic! The book itself literally made me feel like I was in the ladies suitcase. Having never been on a cruise, by the end of the book I felt like I needed to immediately go and book myself on one. This book encompasses everything I want in a chick lit book with the added bonus of the writing being effortless making it a joy to read. There is lost of love, tears and laughter as you join the ladies on a cruise that will literally change their lives. There was only one negative to this book (I know this is ridiculous but¡K) every time I picked it up I couldn¡t stop humming that irritating theme tune from the advert on the TV º! I was surprised that this book was so good, and I don¡t mean that badly. I expected it to be good; I just didn¡t expect it to be brilliant. However, brilliant is the perfect word for it. An absolute must have for a beach read! Roll on with the next MJ book! |
