Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Nouwen, author of more than 30 books and pastor of L'Arche Daybreak Community Center in Toronto, here shares his spiritual journey. In simple meditations he gently and quietly presents small packets of wisdom, most of them already known to Nouwen readers. Among the less familiar, some insights inevitably are more illuminating than others. For instance, Nouwen reports asking Mother Theresa's advice concerning his many and complex problems. Her answer-"Well, when you spend one hour a day adoring your Lord and never do anything which is wrong... you will be fine"-completely cuts through his pretentious self-absorption and points directly to what is holy. While the present volume is hardly Nouwen at his best, it still has some fine moments and is a rewarding read.

From Library Journal

Most touching is Nouwen's account of his near-fatal accident when hit by a car while walking over ice to help a handicapped boy. Nouwen goes through many emotions: real anger when gas station attendants refuse to drive him to the boy, a realization that the accident has given him a new pespective on his life, peace in the face of death but also the realization that "it was not love that kept me clinging to life but unresolved anger." When he does survive, he asks, "Why was I asked to return to a place where love is so ambiguous?" Brief but profound are his responses to the experience as he realizes God's call to deeper trust in God and to radical freedom. Nouwen's personal narrative is an important book for many people pondering the mystery of life and death, regardless of their religious commitments.

5.0 out of 5 stars a handybook for life, Aug 26 2006
This review is from: Here and Now: Living in the Spirit (Paperback)
Nouwen addresses all the issues of life with the dexterity of a master, yet allows us to know how very human and frail he is. It is almost as though, we are exploring the complexities of life together and supported and guided and comforted along the way. Despite having read countless books by him, Nouwen continues to speak to the reader in a very real and wonderful way. A truly amazing gift of a writer !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Be Still and Know that I AM, Nov 24 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Beyond the Mirror (Paperback)
Henri Nouwen examines his life after a near death accident in which he encounters the Living God.

Facing the possibililty of dying he is able to let go and let God's unconditional love come to him and accept himself as God sees him.

His recovery from the accident brings about many changes in his attitude towards his family, friends, acquaintances and yes even his enemies. The experience brought resolve and forgiveness for his sins and the sins of others.

To come back to the living and take his daily cross was very difficult, since he had already prepared himself for the next life with Christ. To return to the former routine seemed impossible at that time but before long he had gone back to his former ways and was constantly trying to keep the peace that he had found during his illness.

Another book that touches on going to the mountain top and coming back would be "Hind's Feet on High Places" an allegory by Hannah Hurnard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Preparing for Home, Dec 30 2002
By
"scoobra" (Nashville, TN USA) - See all my reviews
This book is different from many of Nouwen's other writings in that he presents lessons learned and spiritual reflections from a very specific event in his life (an almost fatal accident). As he often does, Nouwen delves deep into his own mind and shares his fears and deepest thoughts as he faced death. His thoughts on forgiveness "in the very end" for others and by others, caused me to give great consideration to how I daily forgive. If you fear death or are not "ready" for it, this book provides comforting thoughts for preparing for our real home.
