Product Description

Genre master Clint Eastwood tries something different with the languid, introspective Hereafter--and succeeds (for the most part). All of the characters at the heart of Peter Morgan's screenplay, which has the feel of a European art film, have suffered a loss or survived an ordeal. They feel disconnected from those who can't relate, which is most everybody. George Lonegan (Matt Damon, Invictus), a Bay Area factory worker, developed psychic powers after a childhood illness but just wants to lead a normal life, despite his brother Billy's efforts to turn him into a John Edwards-like celebrity (Jay Mohr plays Billy). Marie LeLay (the versatile Cécile De France), a TV reporter, emerges unharmed from 2004's Indian Ocean earthquake, only to find her Parisian existence slipping away from her (the tsunami sequence that opens the film is frightfully convincing). And in London, soft-spoken 12-year-old Marcus (Frankie McLaren) loses his twin, Jason (George McLaren), only to end up in foster care. While George reaches out to a lovely, if insecure woman (the overly jittery Bryce Dallas Howard) he meets in a cooking class, Marie writes a book about her experience, and Marcus seeks spiritual guidance. In a Babel-like turn of events, all three find themselves in the United Kingdom, where they cross paths, but what sounds contrived plays out in a surprisingly believable fashion. Eastwood and Morgan (The Queen) don't presume to know what happens after death, suggesting instead that those who search for answers deserve something other than disrespect and derision. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4.0 out of 5 stars does the hereafter really exist? March 28 2011
By falcon
that's what this film, produced and directed by Clint Eastwood is about.it's the story of three people whose lives intersect through separate tragic events.the film doesn't give an opinion one way or another about whether the hereafter exists or not. the viewer has to draw their own conclusions.the acting is very good here.Matt Damon puts in a very understated performance as a reluctant psychic.actually the whole film is rather understated.the movie is very well paced and flows very smoothly from one scene to the next.it's a very dramatically compelling film that draws you in to the story.i really enjoyed it.for me,Hereafter is a 4/5

5.0 out of 5 stars fabulous blu-ray extras May 24 2012
I can't speak for the dvd, but this blu-ray may be worth the price just for the bonus footage on the blu-ray. It includes The Eastwood Factor (Richard Schickel's full length documentary), presented here in hi-def - which on it's own, retails at normal dvd prices (at the time of this writing $16.99 on this site). Also included are a series of featurettes (with a play all option) which explore the necessary and functional use of cgi for this film, along with subject matter research on psychics, twin connections, and communicating with the hereafter. There is also an option to play these featurettes at relevant intervals throughout the film. While the film itself, is a thoughtful piece, these additional extras really are a blu-ray bonus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Even real psychics can be fake sometimes March 20 2012
It doesn't matter if you come from London, Paris or San Francisco. It doesn't matter if we speak the same language.
We live in the same world, undergo similar experiences, and respond to those experiences in different ways. Some of those experiences offer insights into something more that lies beyond the everyday reality you can see, hear, feel or touch.

A female French tv journalist has a near death experience in an island resort in a tsunami which jolts her out of her ordinary everyday reality. A 12 year old London boy who copes with the sudden death of his twin brother goes into foster care while his mother goes into rehab, and seeks answers, and Matt Damon plays a reluctant 'real' psychic in San Francisco who people seek in their quest for answers. He has the gift which he considers a curse. If you are like me, as you watch you wonder if there is an invisible thread that will somehow connect these three stories, and their paths will somehow cross.

Hereafter shows a major shift in direction for Clint Eastwood, and Matt Damon. All of Clint Eastwood movies tend to be grounded in reality, whereas Hereafter moves to a metaphysical level. Some people who usually like Clint Eastwood movies won't like this transition. So, you have been warned. Matt Damon often plays action heroes, not renowned for their psychic abilities.

Matt Damon plays a blue collar worker who has spurned his intuitive gift in favor of labor. He used to be a famous psychic, but now chooses to be anonymous and his brother encourages him to return to this potentially lucrative life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eastwood gold. Oct. 2 2011
By Andrew in Calgary TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I'm not sure which of Clint Eastwood's directorials I liked better, The Unforgiven or Hereafter. Their subject matters are so different that it's even hard to compare them. But perhaps what is similar about the two movies is how Eastwood gives enough focus on the minor characters so we can appreciate that they are people too, with interesting stories of their own, but we just aren't going to get the details of everyone's story. Clint isn't in this movie (except that's his music in the background), unless he managed to play a cryptic role somewhere that escaped my notice.

Of course Matt Damon is excellent as always but in Hereafter he plays such a vulnerable character that you forget that he can also play Jason Bourne or Will Hunting. This is not an action movie, it's a movie that puts you in touch with your feelings and beliefs, and helps you see the complexity of everyone around you.

You will enjoy this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful Story Telling May 2 2011
This is masterful Story telling. The REAL exotic locations, the smooth pace of the film and the credibility of the story makes it a really captivating film. The actors have dept. Eastwood is capable of portraying real people, with their flaws and qualities; not the Bruce Willis or other type of Flawless actors. My wife and I watched it and will watch it again. More movies need to be made like this. It's better than any mainstream "Hollywood" production.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Underated gem of a movie July 28 2013
What would you expect with Matt Damon and Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood. You'd expect a great movie and that's what this was. I guess I didn't have any expectations which always helps but I was really pleasantly surprised by this movie. Love it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting May 31 2013

I guess I was expecting some sort of afterlife story like What Dreams May Come and because if it I was very disappointed. I love Matt Damon that was the only reason I purchased the movie.
