5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, May 10 2011

This story started out good and just got better and is so far my favorite of the Highland series by Mary Wine. We're introduced to Quinton in To Conquer a Highlander, which I loved, and Dierdre in Highland Hellcat which I didn't.

Quinton is the most aware of his standing among the clans, arguably he's got the most to lose, and seems to be always plotting and scheming. He's brooding and arrogant and at least two steps ahead of everyone around him. Boiled down though, he's a virile handsome clansman looking for a mate who can swell his heart along with what's under his kilt.

Dierdre is the most mature of the women in the series; she's been through hell but doesn't turn herself into a martyr for past poor judgment. She's headstrong but not stupid and she wants to be loved and even after the shame of being used, knows she deserves it. She has doubts at the beginning, but goes after Quinton with a satisfying gusto.

Since Dierdre is not a frightened virgin the steamy bits are robust but not overly graphic. They are well placed and the author tells a story, let's the romance develop and isn't heavy-handed with the sex. I really couldn't care less about the historical aspect but the details about clan life and settings were interesting. I highly recommend it for a pure romantic escapism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best in the Highland Trilogy!, May 28 2011
By Regan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Highland Heat: Scottish Highlands Trilogy, Book three (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the third in Wine's 15th century Highlander series (TO CONQUER A HIGHLANDER, HIGHLAND HELLCAT and HIGHLAND HEAT), and I believe it is the best. I gave 4 and 1/2 stars to book #1, 4 stars to book #2, but I'm giving this one 5 stars. To me it stands out from the other two and finishes the trilogy perfectly. I will definitely read it again.

HIGHLAND HEAT tells the story of Quinton Cameron (Earl of Liddell, laird of the Camerons and a friend of Conner Lindsey), and Deirdre Chattan, ruined sister of Conner's wife, Brina--all of whom we met in book #2.

The year is 1439, two years after Deirdre (who was betrothed to Conner) was seduced by Melor Douglas in his plan to undo the Lindsey alliance with the Chattans. Deirdre, now shamed and her dowry given to the church, has taken to living at the abbey where her sister Kaie is a contented nun. Though she works hard, Deirdre is not content. One night, the Queen of Scotland and mother of young James II, Joan Beaufort, comes to the abbey seeking sanctuary. She asks Deirdre, who resembles the Queen in appearance, to pretend to be her so that she might escape to marry again. Deirdre, a woman of courage, who longs to earn a place of honor, agrees. Meanwhile, Quinton Cameron, a man who has kissed Deirdre and stirred her blood like no other, has been searching for the Queen. His men kidnap Deirdre (who is dressed in the Queen's clothes), believing they have captured Queen Joan. They take her to Quentin's castle where the passion rages hot and heavy between Quinton and Deirdre. They are two stubborn souls, each of whom has been betrayed by someone they loved. Quinton vows never to give his heart again though he will take a mistress, but being a mistress is not a place of honor and Deirdre will not have it after what she's been through.

Wine has delivered a superb historic tale and a sizzling romance with two strong, attractive characters. As always, her writing is excellent, the dialog well done, the period in time well described, the characters richly developed and the story woven like the most detailed tapestry. In this one, I can find no faults, no misses, no inconsistencies. I highly recommend Highland Heat--it is the best in a wonderful Highland trilogy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highland Heat, Aug 29 2011
By MSEreads "mesreads" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Highland Heat: Scottish Highlands Trilogy, Book three (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a solidly entertaining highland romance.

Deidre was barely a young woman when she lost her heart to a deceiving man. He proclaimed love and promised marriage but was really using her to strike out at her betrothed. Disgraced and broken hearted she goes to the convent. She tries to be content and work through her shame but it is hard to dampen a true nature of passion.

Quinton, Laird Cameron, once met Deidre and was impressed by her fiery spirit. When he meets her at the convent he immediately taunts her with suggestive teasing. She faces off with him but is unable to stop him from searching the abbey for the Queen.

Shortly after the search the Queen does seek refuge in the convent. When she meets Deidre she decides that they look enough alike to have her play decoy. The Queen offers Deidre a position as one of her Ladies in Waiting in exchange for help. Deidre sees this as a way to have a better life and a way to make her father proud of her. She helps the Queen slip off but Deidre is soon captured by Cameron's men. They take her to Quinton thinking they have successfully delivered the Queen to him. Quinton immediately recognizes her and is pleased with his men even if they got the wrong woman.

Deidre wants to leave the Cameron clan and go to her position with the Queen but Quinton has a different idea and has no intention of allowing her out of the keep. Thus the conflict continues in their personal battle. Quinton may be able to prevail in getting Deidre to succumb to the chemistry between them but can he capture her spirit and get her to stay? Deidre has to struggle with the internal battle of desire against the need to not dishonor her father by her actions.

The dialogue is suggestive and sexy; the conflict keen and fun. There are escapes and danger and of course a passion that flares bright and hot. This has it's own share of wisdom and I liked when Laird Douglas says to Deidre:
"We were all young and innocent once, lass."..."Now ye understand what the world is really like. Some crumble when they kicked in the jaw, but others pick themselves up and become stronger. They take the sting and pain and use them to fortify themselves." Page 255.
That is just the sort of person Deidre is.

The characters are very likable and this is a fast, easy read. I enjoyed this romance but give caution that there is some brash, raw language.
