Great Info...Lots of Choices!, Jun 3 2010

This review is from: Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway, 2nd: The Ultimate Travel Guide to America's Most Popular Scenic Roadway (Paperback)
I had purchased Hiking the Blue Ridge after attending a lecture by the author Randy Johnson at Jesse Brown's in Charlotte, NC. I knew the Best Easy Day Hikes Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Best Easy Day Hikes Series) was a wonderful resource for us already so I felt confident that this 'big book' would have even more to offer.
This weekend my husband and I decided to return from a trip via the Blue Ridge Parkway. We were able to stop twice along the way for short beautiful jaunts of about an hour each. The directions to find these 'walks' were perfect and the information about each trail was spot on. Without this book we would have been stuck in the car for hours, unsure which trails were doable in our time frame. Instead we got home AND got inspired! I can't wait to try the longer hikes!
As we were driving home my husband and I discussed what a perfect gift this will make for friends..including one couple that will soon begin an active retirement and a young cousin who is about to graduate. I would not recommend this book for anyone who is looking for an excuse to sit in the car or on the couch. The variety of choices in hikes makes you want to take the short hikes and the longer day or over-nighters.

When I went to Great Smoky Mountain National Park for the first time, I bought the Falcon Guide in Asheville. It made the experience so much easier.
Remembering that, I was very happy to find the Falcon Guide to the Blue Ridge Parkway which, although the parkway is almost in my backyard, covers so much ground that I don't know it well.
I love how the text is broken up by geographic area, as this makes it very easy to look at where I will be and match my location with hikes in the area. I also love that the authors highlight cultural as well as natural landmarks.
I only wish the Falcon Guides would be printed in color! They have spectacular photos, and I wish I could at least get a hint of what they actually look like!
