unforgettable Dominance/submission story,
By C. Dionne "Chrissy Dionne" (Cloverdale, OREGON USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: His Perfect Submissive (Paperback)
Determined to find a way to keep her brother out of jail for embezzlement, Kara is willing to put herself far into debt but it's still not enough. She hopes that his employer Slade Westin will be agreeable to accepting payments if she has half the thirty thousand her brother stole. The last thing she expects is for Slade to come up with a counter offer, one which she's not sure she's comfortable accepting.Slade may be annoyed by Kara's willingness to put herself far into debt to rescue her brother from a situation he created but he can't deny that she's exactly the sort of woman he wants in his life. She's innocent and alluring with a shyness which arouses a protective feeling in him. While he could well afford to let her brother's theft go, he also has no doubt that Ted has a gambling problem and without the threat of jail will continue to be a burden to his family. It's obvious that Kara will do whatever she has to in order to `save' her brother so rather than allow her to borrow against her credit cards and her 401k he devises a offer of his own. He'll forgive her brother's thefts and not turn him over to the police if she agrees to marry him. He's also willing to forgive the monetary amount stolen if Kara stays married to him for one year and her brother receives treatment for his gambling addiction. Oh and there is one other little stipulation - their relationship will be based on dominance and submission. Kara agrees to the marriage despite her own concerns and fears. She's terrified of physical intimacy and with good reason. She survived a horrendous ordeal as a child that she's never gotten over. She's learned to bury her pain and get on with life but that leaves her uncomfortable in her own skin and fearful of relationships. Anyone she's ever trusted with even a portion of what happened to her as a child has abandoned her. Will she be able to find joy in the lifestyle Slade's offering? Will he be able to handle learning the truth behind her oversize clothing and skittish nature? It's a marriage born out of desire and a need to protect, but with a little nurturing and a lot of trust and honesty, Kara and Slade may discover that it's a marriage made in heaven. I feel like I've been waiting for this book's release forever. In fact it was the whole reason I bookmarked the Black Velvet website before it was even officially opened for business. I'm happy to report this book is well worth the wait. Alyssa Aaron delivers a realistic story of a dominant/submissive marriage coupled with the troubling memories of a long ago ordeal that has left Kara emotionally scarred. Slade is exactly the sort of hero I like in these sorts of storylines - strong, sexy, understanding and always puts Kara's needs ahead of his own. HIS PERFECT SUBMISSIVE is not just a fascinating story, it's a study of human nature with irresistible characters and situations that were alternately horrifying, inspiring and thought-provoking. This is Ms. Aaron's first published novel and I must say I'll definitely be on the lookout for more of her writing in the future. Beautifully written and a `must read.' Let me state emphatically that I enjoyed this book and that if readers are seeking the mucho guy brutale in this D/S story, then this hero, Slade, is not the one.Slade is in fact seeking "his perfect submissive" but despairs of ever finding her. Many women are after his money, pretending to be what he desires, yet others are too dominant or aggressive for him. He finds his ideal woman in the one he's been trying to avoid, Kara. Kara is anxious to meet with Slade who happens to be her brother's boss, in an attempt to extricate her brother from an embezzlement scandal where he misappropriated company funds. Slade is loath to meet her, but one look at her as he arrives at his office, nervously waiting all softness and innocence drives the arrow right through his heart. He instantly recognises the woman he has been looking for, the woman capable of satisfying his raging desires. Not being one to miss an opportunity, as his enterprising success demonstrates, he offers her marriage in exchange of her brother's debts. He explains that he is a dominant who wishes to engage in all that this sexual lifestyle entails with her. Kara agrees as she is vastly attracted to this man and has no other means of paying him the money unless she works for years and pays him in instalments. This, however, would mean depriving her ailing mother of the medical care which is vital for sustaining her in life. Slade senses a strong reticence in Kara which is not due to her lack of sexual experience alone. His tender and caring attitude help Kara gain enough confidence to confide that she had been raped as a child and expects the D/S sex to be brutal. He then proceeds to show her in the most endearing way what it is that turns him on, exposing her to her sensual nature and the delights of sexual intimacy. It is a tender well written story, and this comes from someone who is not keen on weak heroines. Ms Aaron has created a shy, gentle woman whose sexual abuse caused her to withdraw from men and who learns to blossom like a lovely flower in the hands of the right man (Aaah! Sweet.) It's a wonderful love story, the type I like to read, with love and heart and sex. 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful

Poorly written, painful to read,

When I began reading this book, I was a little taken aback with the outlandish premise of a man wanting to marry a woman he does not know, but since this was billed as an erotic D/s book, I was totally willing to just roll with it. That being said, it became harder and harder to get through each page without getting supremely frustrated at the repetition of the heroine's backstory. Normally, when I read a book that has a traumatic event that takes place before the start of the story, the event is laid out to some degree, and then it is acceptable for the author to refer back to said event without outlining the *whole thing* all over again. This book was written in a way that rehashes past events and current emotions to a level of repetition that became almost insulting to the reader, and left me feeling like I just wanted to plow through it to get it over with. After reaching the 40% mark (reading on a Kindle), I started to just skim the pages, looking mostly for dialogue and the overall gist of each paragraph so that I could simply make my way through it. The extent to which each emotion in the characters' minds was excessively drawn out and lamented over was simply excruciating in the first half, and I just could not coerce myself to sit through it any longer. The real shame here is that I wanted to like this book. I wanted the heroine to come to terms with her past enough to participate in a healthy relationship. I wanted the hero to help her get there. I guess that in the end, I got those two things - albeit the story jumped past some major plot devices that were thrown out and left unresolved (the heroine's therapy to say the least), but in all honesty this book could have achieved a far superior literary package by cutting about half (no joke, AT LEAST half) of the emotive material, and focusing more on **story** development. It was a very painful read (no BDSM puns intended). The writing style needs some serious development, and the author totally overused certain phrases ("feel/feels good", "gaze rested on", and a few others) to the point of distraction. End result, I would not recommend this book at all. I really tried to think of a target audience who may like it, but I could not think of one. Kindle formatting notes - there were some mildly bothersome formatting issues of odd line returns and subsequent line indentations. The eye stalled on those points every time, and I had to reread those sections once or twice to get the cadence right again. Also, there was no TOC or Indexing, meaning you could not skip ahead chapter by chapter, only page by page. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful

Not only this is poorly written and could benefit from some serious editing and shortening, this reads like an abuse story, instead of a BDSM scenario. I am sorry, I cannot recommend this at all.
