A bestselling historian returns with a visually sumptuous look at how the railroad transformed North America.
The railroad changed the face of North America forever, allowing the its economy to become industrialized and catalyzing settlement and growth within the continent. People and goods could now move vast distances, time zones were standardized, and military use of the railroads transformed the nature of war. This latest book in the popular Historical Atlas series outlines the development of the railroad system from its very beginnings around 1830 through to today's freight railroads and government passenger services. It features an unprecedented 400 -plus contemporary and historical railroad maps, photographs and many other railroadiana illustrations. Here is a colourful, integrated approach to the origins and development of railroads-their heyday, decline and modern rebirth-in both the United States and Canada, for anyone who loves art books, history, maps or railroads.

Excellent!,
This review is from: Historical Atlas Of The North American Railroad (Hardcover)
I purchased this book as a gift for someone who has an impressive collection of books on this subject and, is most knowledgeable on trains & geography. I'm told by him this is without a doubt the most interesting, comprehensive and informative book on trains and their histories he's yet to read. The attention given to detail is incredible including; pictures and especially excellent maps. He has, thus far, enjoyed hours of reading with a great deal more awaiting him. Therefore, I can readily recommend this book to serve as a wonderful addition to any train enthusiast library.

Historical Atlas of North American Railroads,
By John Dusterberry - Published on Amazon.com

I was somewhat disappointed and thought it not as good as previous atlases from Derek Hayes. Most of the maps had to be reproduced at such a small scale that it is difficult or impossible to read the names of individual places.

Disappointed,

I was very disappointed in this book. As an Atlas you need a magnification glass to see the maps. Much too condensed in all the maps to be of value to the reader. Too bad the author publishers did not review this on a basis of, can we read it??? NO. Well it should have been changed before publishing, in my opinion.

A new treat from Wonder Hayes,

Hayes deliciously combines 2 of my great interests, choo-choos and historical atlases. His style and use of contemporary maps makes it very unique from other topical historical atlases focused on railroads. Everything in it is wonderful. Contemporary maps rarely appear in other efforts. My only complaint is the great focus on western railroads. Okay, I realize that for him to have covered the eastern roads, the volume would be twenty times its size. Perhaps the topic was too comprehensive, but I know it could have been more balanced. I love it, and if you try to take it away from me, come well-armed and make satisfactory funeral arrangements. |
