Book Description

Voegelin's magisterial account of medieval political thought opens with a survey of the structure of the period and continues with an analysis of the Germanic invasions, the fall of Rome, and the rise of empire and monastic Christianity. The political implications of Christianity and philosophy in the period are elaborated in chapters devoted to John of Salisbury, Joachim of Flora (Fiore), Frederick II, Siger de Brabant, Francis of Assisi, Roman law, and climaxing in a remarkable study of Saint Thomas Aquinas's mighty thirteenth-century synthesis.

Although History of Political Ideas was begun as a textbook for Macmillan, Voegelin never intended it to be a conventional chronological account. He sought instead an original comprehensive interpretation, founded on primary materials and taking into account the most advanced specialist scholarship—or science as he called it—available to him. Because of this, the book grew well beyond the confines of an easily marketable college survey and until now remained unpublished.

In the process of writing it, Voegelin himself outgrew the conceptual frame of a "History of Political Ideas," turning to compose Order and History and the other works of his maturity. History of Political Ideas became the ordered collection of materials from which much of Voegelin's later theoretical elaboration grew, structured in a manner that reveals the conceptual intimations of his later thought. As such, it provides an unparalleled opportunity to observe the working methods and the intellectual evolution of one of our century's leading political thinkers. In its embracing scope, History of Political Ideas contains both analyses of themes Voegelin developed in his later works and discussions of authors and ideas to which he did not return or which he later approached from a different angle and with a different emphasis.

The Middle Ages to Aquinas has withstood the test of time. What makes it still highly valuable is its thoroughly revisionist approach, cutting through all the convenient clichés and generalizations and seeking to establish the experiential underpinnings that typified the medieval period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devastates Enlightenment Pygmy Techno-Political Rationalism and the Utopian Egalitarian State-Idea in Era of Anarch vs. Katechon, Mar 25 2012
By Arcto-Phylax "John Johnson" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: History of Political Ideas, Volume 8 (CW26): Crisis and the Apocalypse of Man (Hardcover)
I am outraged there are no reviews here of this socio-politically and metaphysically monumentally significant work, delivering the doom-stroke of defensive tyrannicidal vinde against the satanic dragon of the neo-Sorelian mythos and crypto-religion of political disorder that is Utopian universalistic democracy.

Voegelin stood up against the dialectic of involutive Nihilism envenoming the West, and delivered the death-blow to the daimonism of democracy and the democratic idea--in perpetuity.

But the herdlings of the rabble, are ignorant unto eternity. The epic nature of Voegelin is totally impossible to half-grasp by these robotic golems of Beelzebub and Moloch.

Voegelin stands triumphant, upon the deathbed of democracy--the deed is locked in the book of history now, and irreversible. But only visible to the wise. The visionless perpetuate the death-march of civilization.

Since infancy, since day one, we modern Westerners have been conditioned systematically in a certain social consensus-reality deception and self-deception--the linear identification of goodness, virtue, happiness and even Divinity Itself with acquiescent conformity to the will of "collectivist discipline" of egalitarian, liberal-humanist democracy.

But "salvational democracy" is a moral and philosophical piece of madness, Voegelin slays this beast of usurpation in meta-philosophical refutation.

How did the...chaos-freakshow...of anarchic monstrosity and bestiality of centralized neo-imperialist democracy become the incontestable taboo surrogate-"numen" of the brainless, the naive, the manifold sub-strata of the West, its only religion in post-Christian times?

Mass-democracy is the pagan cult of the spiritually lower, intellectually cadaverous sub-men begriming the West with their presence, the motley, diverse rabblement in general, so spiritless and mentally servile to Deify the unclean principle of LUST FOR POWER, the impure "libido dominandi" of the most morally vile sort of humanity...and then to impudently seek aggressively its global, universal, expansionist anarcho-tyranny and misrule?

The laws of democracy are the laws of beasts, and are worth nothing. The Lex Primordialis of God supersedes its pretensions in conquering majesty. Democracy is mere projection of the bestial passions of the scientifically and statistically inevitably sickeningly IMMORAL and VILLAINOUS-HEARTED mob, plain and simple.

The Enlightenment mind worships witchcraft-idols and mantic "spooks" more deeply, more surreptitiously, than the most degenerate of ancients, or feudal-age serfs!

Modern-age tools of the Gramscian-Kojevian democratic eschaton-regnum of millennial Anarcho-Utopia...whose essence is predatory psychopathic psychosis and dehumanization of humankind, morally have "earned" the "right" to perish on the future Katechontic battle-ground for idolatrous blasphemy and assault of God, as voluntarily morally self-enslaved pawns of their own unholy lower selves they shall rot in sheol as manes and rephaim, unresurrected death-essences, consumables for Satan.

I am sorry to inform the world of intellect-bereft contemporary plebs and backward half-pithecoid, half-human slaves of pure materialist density, but your false godlet is...AT LEAST TO THE PERCEPTIVE...DEAD!

Voegelin dueled in single combat your false idol-daemon in metaphysical trial-by-battle, and arose victorious over the corpse of the usurping serpentine demon posing to the multitude as a satanical "angel of light."

Voegelin has destroyed...in logic, and philosophical validity...the democracy of blood-tyranny so popularly Deified in mock-religiosity, this system which was never the friend of civilized, refined human beings.

How did democracy ever become the dogmatic APE-GOD and Arch-Principium of Esse of the West? Plato, Jesus, Plotinus, pseudo-Dionysius, Eckhart, Bonaventure, etc. --the patrimony of Light, of ontological hierarchy, the ladder of Jacob, of moral nobility, of social structure harmonized to moral rank and bearing, the idea of meritocratic spiritual aristocracy -- the real West so easily self-surrendered to the masses of corruption.

The oligarchic motions of shadow-politicos deceived the empty-minded soul-frames of the supposedly "progressively creative" Western-Aryan sub-races. When the rabblement blasphemed the monotheistic super-essential Godhead in sacralizing the democratic ideology in neo-heathenism and virtual necromancy, the majority Westerners, animal-souls merely, forthwith forfeited to the real God their moral personhood in moral suicide.

The sons of Light know the Evil One is defeated in the end, but the West, as a generality, has *already performed collective self-immolation.*

The West no longer exists, spiritually, and Voegelin was brave enough to announce its lack of existence -- and the Dark Age erupting in the final KRISIS creeps into history in gradual ominous maleficence -- except in those souls possessing the rarest of gifts, of godly Logoic intellectus and pure-hearted Agapism.

In the dark days of Roman despotism, the dissociated atom-like, culturally-fractured commonality, no longer Roman but a mixed, characterless gigantic mob, gleefully worshiped the blood-soaked Imperator war-lord of a decadent Rome as a "divus", a God-Man-the warlord "beast-man" of his true face cloaked in wretched outward externals and trappings of superficiality the impure godless commons lacked vision to penetrate beyond...

In the end, the final battle is inevitable, and God has victory. The present world-system of the dead but dreaming anarchic monstrosity Voegelin defeated in metaphysical intellectual agon, remains existentially liminal -- the draconian maelfic essence is foredestined to re-surface, the dragon of base lustful lawlessness enshrouding itself in externally bedazzling robes of light, as the purest angel of light.

If the "court-esotericists" of Luciferian international oligarcho-plutocracy, hiding in the societal structural illusion of "moral democracy" as the lying worms of men they are, -- if these servants of the Evil One can "play" the political "game" craftily, as amoral Machiavellians by nature, Voegelin likewise showed there is still a vestigial presence of intellectually-powerful Bearers of Order left on this planet, who too can skillfully wage deep meta-political counter-guerrilla combat of heroicity against the occult-war stratagems of their esoterrorist adversaries...

God assures us, the souls who love Him, are granted goodness in the end. In the meantime, while Voegelin, in the realm of pure logic and philosophical metaphysics, has katechontically restrained in academic terms the final doom of the Nihilist System. the dragon yet sleeps, who awaits in another plane to cross the threshold and reign on earth in complete unopposed usurpation, dreaming of his reprisal lustfully...

The magi of Christian LOGOS and NOMOS, and the Galahadean warrior-elite of the Sons of Light remaining in the spiritually decomposed necropolis and corpse-land of the West, must mobilize their souls in ever-intenser ascesis of interior warfare.

The zombie HERDENMENSCHEN of the fallen West are sleepwalkers in spirit and are perpetually eager to idolize the draconic being of Nihilism. Anarch vs. Katechon is the theopolitical last battle -- decide your fate, Voegelin faces us to face.
