When I viewed this film on CBS last may, I was blown away by the extensive details that were found within it. WWII and pre history have always fascinated me, and this film filled in some blanks that i always wanted to be filled without reading extensive documentation. Robert Carlyle does a superiour job, some of the best acting i've ever seen in a T.V. movie, or perhaps in a motion picture. This man takes all the evil of hitler and conveys it on screen, which in my case caused chills down my spine. So, to sum it up Hitler: The Rise of Evil is a supurb 4 hour film that convey's the subject of Hitler, like none other...

A light-weight portrayal of Hitler,

This review is from: Hitler - The Rise of Evil (DVD)
There is decently good history here and a decent attempt, on balance, to portray the rise of the Nazis without the dehumanizing and demonization that has been typical of the the film industry over the years. The evil of the Nazis is revealed realistically and rather matter of factly -- which is a good thing. The principal weakness of 'Hitler: The Rise of Evil' is, frankly, Robert Carlyle as Hitler; the actor certainly, the direction maybe. Carlyle simply doesn't project the gravitas the actual person must have had. The Carlyle's ranting and strutting gets too crazy too soon to show the man as he must have been to appeal to so many. The bottom line is Robert Carlyle is no Bruno Ganz.

The Myth continues to grow,

This review is from: Hitler: The Rise of Evil (DVD)
A tacky, sensationalized portrayal of Hitler and his evil cohorts, which proves to be one dimensional in every respect. There is little here that has anything to do with history. In fact, for kids these days, they might think the character of Hitler a bit of a joke, similar to one of the villains in a Batman movie or similar action films. Hitler is a mythical villain in "Rise of Evil".Unfortunately, as a result young, modern audiences will not appreciate through this film the "banality of evil" that Hitler represents, and that which surrounds them every day. Rather than emphasizing the danger of such a man and those similar to him, this movie unintentionally trivializes Hitler and his legacy. The warning to beware such men and their evil is lost within the melodramatics of the performances. Much conjecture is utilized to fill in the rather sparse historical facts relating to earlier periods of Hitler's life. That being said, Carlyle's over-the-top rendition of Hitler is quite entertaining if you ignore who he is meant to be, and the historical inaccuracies. If you like Carlyle, buy it to see his performance.
