When I viewed this film on CBS last may, I was blown away by the extensive details that were found within it. WWII and pre history have always fascinated me, and this film filled in some blanks that i always wanted to be filled without reading extensive documentation. Robert Carlyle does a superiour job, some of the best acting i've ever seen in a T.V. movie, or perhaps in a motion picture. This man takes all the evil of hitler and conveys it on screen, which in my case caused chills down my spine. So, to sum it up Hitler: The Rise of Evil is a supurb 4 hour film that convey's the subject of Hitler, like none other...

There is decently good history here and a decent attempt, on balance, to portray the rise of the Nazis without the dehumanizing and demonization that has been typical of the the film industry over the years. The evil of the Nazis is revealed realistically and rather matter of factly -- which is a good thing.

The principal weakness of 'Hitler: The Rise of Evil' is, frankly, Robert Carlyle as Hitler; the actor certainly, the direction maybe. Carlyle simply doesn't project the gravitas the actual person must have had. The Carlyle's ranting and strutting gets too crazy too soon to show the man as he must have been to appeal to so many. The bottom line is Robert Carlyle is no Bruno Ganz.
