Product Description

According to the Australian Book Review: âAustralia is not the science fiction capital of the world; in fact we are probably not even on the map. This unfortunate fact would change if we could produce more writers like Paul Collins.â

Collins has just added another impressive work to his record. An action-packed science fiction thriller, The Hiveborn completes his highly acclaimed series The Earthborn Wars. Welkin Quinn and his small community of Earthborn and Skyborn survivors face the vastly superior technology of the Hivebornâan ancient race of parasitic aliens. The Hiveborn possess the humans they encounter, turning them into automata, thoughtless zombies who follow the singular will of the Hiveborn Queen: this ruler is the source of the implacable Hivemind, the consciousness that desires universal domination. To survive, the human resistance is forced to leave the bowels of the New Zealand mine they call home. Their special-ops forces take the fight to the Hiveborn base centered in post-apocalyptic Melbourne, and finally to space itself.

In The Earthborn Wars, Collins has provided readers with a gritty, lived-in worldâa believable future with believable characters. Though set centuries in the future, The Hivebornâs themes and questions of warfare and freedom, morality and responsibility are intimately familiar. This third installment of The Earthborn Wars provides a thought-provoking conclusion full of seamless action sequences and stunning plot twists.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hiveborn -- Book #3 in The Earthborn Wars trilogy, May 23 2010
By Olive Rish - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hiveborn (Hardcover)
The Hiveborn: Book 3 in the Earthborn Wars Trilogy by Paul Collins (Bohemian Ink) HB RRP: $32.95

Just as a good wine improves with age, so too, has this story improved with each instalment.
In books 1 and 2, The Earthborn, and The Skyborn, readers are introduced to Welkin Quinn, a fourteen year old boy who has spent a regimented life in space aboard the sky world Colony. When Welkin's world falls apart and he's banished to the chaos of the lower decks where rebels rule, he soon discovers the regime of Colony's elders is a lie.
Colony returns to Earth where what is left of the human race is struggling to survive. The Skyborn's return inflames the Earthborn who want nothing less than total annihilation of their space brothers. Having been rejected by his own people, Welkin is thrust into the midst of the fighting. He survives thanks to a group of Earthborn who come to accept him as one of their own.
In this, the final book in the series, Welkin and his band of Earth and Skyborn comrades must put their earlier earthly concerns aside and stop an imminent alien invasion. The Hiveborn, parasitic creatures introduced at the end of book 2, are not just intent on human domination, but are determined to conquer every sentient race in the universe. Needless to say this is a war that will take as much luck as human ingenuity and courage to win.
Though intended for the YA market, this brilliantly conceived and thought-provoking story is sure to delight SF fans of all ages. Reading the first two volumes in this series is recommended, though not necessary thanks to the inclusion of a detailed prologue, which updates readers on the story so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Robert Heinlein meets Tom Clancy, Mar 14 2007
By A Reader - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hiveborn (Hardcover)
This final instalment of THE EARTHBORN WARS (see Earthborn and Skyborn) was definitely worth the wait! Here, Welkin and The Family battle for supremacy against a sinister and implacable hive mind that assimilates its enemies, at the same time as they're trying to put humanity back together after centuries of desolation (I guess you might say they're both seeking to create a kind of 'order' out of the chaos). The action and pace are pretty relentless, the characters quirky and believable, and the writing puts you THERE, on the page, sort of like a sci-fi Tom Clancy. A review I have in SF Chronicle says, "Worthy of sitting on the same shelf with early Heinlein and Norton". I couldn't agree more. But all I can say is, you SURE the word `trilogy' means there's no No. 4? Oh man, that sucks!
