A movie that truly lives up (or is that down?) to its title, Hobo with a Shotgun brings on the giggly ick with a zeal that recalls the glory days of legendary exploitation mavens Troma Studios (The Toxic Avenger, Surf Nazis Must Die, Fat Guy Goes Nutzoid, etc.). Beginning with an awesome Ennio Morricone homage, the film follows the nameless title character (Rutger Hauer) as he hops a train to a new town with dreams of buying a lawnmower and settling down, only to run afoul of an evil drug kingpin and his two severely messed-up sons. Disgusted by the level of corruption surrounding him, he stumbles into a sporting goods store and… well, the title tells you the rest, really. Expanding on his notorious short of the same name (the winner of a trailer contest originated by Grindhouse's Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez), writer-director Jason Eisener maintains a delicate balance between black comedy and ridiculously gross money shots, with precious little of the downtime between inspired gags that plagues so many films of its type. Anchored by Hauer's more-committed-than-it-probably-needed-to-be performance, this assuredly guilty pleasure ranks as a real rarity: a tribute to '80s VHS trash that functions beyond mere parody. Keep your thumb poised near the rewind button at all times. --Andrew Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultra Violent & A Total BLAST!!!, July 7 2011

This review is from: Hobo With a Shotgun (DVD)
Hobo (Rutger Hauer) is a lone character who travels from place to place
using the old railways. He's a man who's past is a mystery, a man who is
going nowhere in particular. But what Hobo really wants is to find a place
to start his life anew.

The train rolls into Hope Town (Aptly Graffiti Renamed "Scum Town") And as
soon as Hobo arrives in town, things already take a turn for the worse.
Drug dealers, gang members, crooked cops, junkies, pimps and even a perverted
Santa roam the dusty streets of the town. He witnesses a brutal public execution
take place under the leadership from the town crime lord "The Drake"
and his two equally demented sons Slick and Ivan.

After rescuing a beautiful prostitute named Abbie (Molly Dunsworth) he locks
horns with Slick (The Drake's favorite son) and ends up getting himself into
trouble with the crooked cops who brutalize him. Abbie takes him in and keeps
him safe from the outside world gone to hell.

Not soon after, he foils a violent robbery in progress at a pawnshop
where he cashes in his nickles and dimes for a large 12 gauge pump action shotgun.
From here on, he's reborn to deliver justice, one shell at a time!!

A little history on this movie: Hobo With A Shotgun started out as a fake movie trailer. The Fake "Hobo With A Shotgun" faux trailer was originally featured in the Canadian theatrical release of 2007's Grindhouse just before the Machete trailer. It's so satisfying to see the directors of those movies actually make their movies from their faux trailers. (Machete, Hobo With A Shotgun)

I saw Hobo With A Shotgun during it's limited release here in Canada and I was
TOTALLY blown away by it!! Rutger Hauer is amazing in anything he does, and he plays this character with such sympathy and strength that he is quite lovable as the Hobo. Sarah Dunsworth also does a terrific job in being the kind, daughter-like figure in Hobo's adventure.

The nonstop action and violence that is constantly thrown our way is everything an avid moviegoer could ever wish for. Hobo With A Shotgun delivers well what is promised and doesn't disappoint!!

HIGH RECOMMENDED!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rutger Hauer Rocks, Oct 17 2011

(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 50 REVIEWER)
If you liked Grindhouse (Planet Terror + Death Proof and assorted trailers) and Machete, you will love Canadian-born Hobo With A Shotgun. And if you happen to notice a few of your friends from Trailer Park Boys (Ricky aka Robb Wells as well as Sam Losco and the courtroom judge) that's because it was filmed in Nova Scotia. And if you're wondering why co-star Molly Dunsworth looks so familiar, there's a good reason. She is the daughter of John Dunsworth (Jim Lahey) and sister of Sarah E. Dunsworth (Sarah). There's lots of Trailer Park lineage in this movie.

However, that is where the comparisons end. When the Hobo (no name!) shows up in Hope Town (renamed Scum Town) he immediately notices something amiss: Gangs and prostitutes running wild. Then he bears witness to Logan's (Robb Wells) brutal death by the hands of his own brother and nephews (by decapitation no less) and realizes that this town truly is scum town.

What follows is a bloody cartoon-violent spectacle that really has no socially redeeming value, other than evil is evil and must be punished. The town is run by The Drake and his two nephews, Slick and Ivan, who make rape and murder a part of daily life. Torching a school bus full of kids just to keep the town in line is nothing to these guys. Although a certain hobo might have something to say about it....

This hobo doesn't want to be a part of the violence. All he wants is $50 to buy a lawnmower and start his own business. After earning the $50 (in a Bum Fights style video) he has a change of heart, thanks to prostitute Abby (Dunsworth). The shotgun is also $50 and he's just the right man to clean up this town.

You will see intestines, blood, gore, and plenty of sharp objects. This hobo takes no prisoners -- but neither do his foes! Can the hobo clean up this town? He will be up against he match when The Plague (a mysterious supernatural armored duo) show up to do him in....

Hobo With A Shotgun is loaded (pun intended) with extras including two audio commentaries and an alternate ending that I prefer to the real one. You also get the original trailer (with Mike Jackson also of Trailer Park Boys) that started it all. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

While the acting in Hobo With A Shotgun is amature and over the top, Rutger Hauer keeps it grizzled and serious, turning in ironically one of the best performances of his career! If there ever was a grizzled action star ready to fill the retired shoes of Clint Eastwood, it's Rutger Hauer. He is deserving of a major, major comeback and this performance proves it.

4 stars. Not for the weak of heart.

I haven't remembered the last time I was angry with myself over a purchase like this. I can spend $20/week on losing lotto tickets & not care. But after watching 3/4 of the film I just couldn't be bothered watching the rest. I was actually angry with myself for buying this film. I gave it away.
