At first glance, Verday's book appears to be overflowing with fabulous potential. The stunning cover art and legendary premise lure readers into thinking this hefty tome is worth the time investment, but the story line drags, disappoints and quickly falls flat. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is the obvious catalyst for the story, but other than the setting, Abbey's obsession with the tale, and the quotes that open each chapter, it is unclear as to how the legend relates until the last few chapters. Unfortunately readers might not feel compelled to stick it out to the very end after reading countless pages describing Abbey's mundane activies like mixing scents, baking cookies, organizing her uncle's office or working on a science fair project. Although the book will definitely sell itself, it is not well written and readers may be disappointed. This scheduled trilogy may be a series to pass up if budgets are tight.
----VOYA April 2010
Just when Abbey starts to feel that she might survive all this, she learns a secret that makes her question everything she thought she knew about her best friend. How could Kristen have kept silent about so much? And could this secret have led to her death? As Abbey struggles to understand Kristen's betrayal, she uncovers a frightening truth that nearly unravels her—one that will challenge her emerging love for Caspian, as well as her own sanity.
“Spectacular! The Hollow keeps you reading from beginning to end without coming up for air.” --L.J. Smith, bestselling author of The Vampire Diaries and Night World

Long and drawn out, but beautifully written,

This review is from: The Hollow (Hardcover)
I will warn you all ahead of time: be prepared for a VERY LONG novel. Although 544 pages may not seem big, the book is filled with endless descriptions of sounds, sights, and smells. The plot is quite slow moving. In fact, it's very slow moving. I was about halfway through the novel and I was still wondering where this was going. I don't really recommend this to people who just want a fast moving plot to read through in one sitting. It's just not done with this book. This book was meant to be slowly read, taking in the setting, and the descriptions but at the same time reading a slowly evolving plot.So then we ask; did I enjoy this book or not? I'd have to say despite the slow moving plot and there were a few times here and there where I almost gave up reading it. However I really did like how the scenes were described, the smells were so well written I could almost literally smell them myself. It felt as if you were there, as the descriptions were rich and filled with the Legend of Sleepy Hollow references. I thought Sleepy Hollow was a nice quaint little place to live in and just the way it was described really took me there. (I wouldn't mind living there myself!) There is a sense of mystery throughout the novel, regarding Kristen's death and it still remains unsolved. I thought Abbey was a likable character although she did not stand out as much and could be considered 'normal' (as opposed to characters we are used to reading). I did like reading about her hobby on making perfumes. I thought that was interesting and haven't read a character that's set in present day who is into that sort of thing. It's definitely different. Abbey's relationship with Caspian is nice to read, although I wish more was added to it. The story behind Caspian is a bit obvious and easy to guess but it was still an interesting read. I wanted to know more about Kristen and her secrets. There was so much more to go into but not much has been revealed. The mystery surrounding Caspian, Nikolas, and Katy was interesting, however it was a little predictable. It was well thought out though, and it ties nicely with the Sleepy Hollow legend. I think this is a perfect novel to read around Autumn/Halloween. The setting is perfect and suits the season, and although the plot was slow moving, and reading the book felt like a very slow walk in the park, I suggest to stick with it and read it through. It's a beautifully written book and certainly deserves to be read.

This review is from: The Hollow (Hardcover)
A interesting read about a girl living in the real town of Sleepy Hollow in Upstate New York. The best part is how it is influenced by the Washington Irving's "Legend of Sleepy Hollow". An excellent read that is more original than most young adult books. I love Caspian and I can't wait for the next one.

This review is from: The Hollow (Hardcover)
This is my second time reading The Hollow. And I have to say that I enjoyed it the second time just as I did the first. There were many mixed reviews for The Hollow, and I'm one of those that absolutely loves this series. The book starts right in the middle of a funeral for Abby's best friend, Kristen. I really give it high points for starting off like that. We are thrust right in the middle of Abby's emotions and thoughts of her friend's sudden death. The book was fairly slow, but I enjoyed it despite that. If you don't like slow paced books then this might not be for you. But I found myself falling in love with Abby's everyday life. What I loved the most about The Hollow is how the whole town as well as the book is centered around The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the author of it - Washington Irving - who the town idolizes. I was charmed by Abby's frequent visits to his grave and how she spent time taking about her life and troubles to the dead author. After I first read the book I quickly bought myself a copy of Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Another thing that interested me was Abby's perfume making. I enjoyed reading about the different scents she made for people and was rather interested in the whole process. The characters were all interesting and I enjoyed their interactions with Abby. The cast was rather small, barely any people, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and wouldn't want more added. Overall The Hollow is a favorite series for me and I enjoyed the second book The Haunted even more than the first. I still haven't got around to reading the last book - don't ask why. I just never gotten around to getting a copy of the last book. But as soon as I have the chance I'll make sure to do it. I fell in love with Abby's story and the small town of Sleepy Hollow. The Hollow is a charming tale and an interesting take on The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow.
