Great insights into Buddy's world,
By
This review is from: Holly;Buddy and the Crickets D (DVD)
I grew up in England and was a teenager when Buddy Holly first appeared on the scene. I still recall vividly the magic and special creativity that characterised everything he recorded. Needless to say the news of his death so early in his career was like a personal blow to me and my friends at the time.As for the previous attempts to tell the story of his life, I was disappointed in the feature movie but thought Paul McCartney's later effort was pretty good until I saw this "Definitive Story" this past week. It is far and away the best telling of the Buddy Holly story I have seen, mainly because of the authenticity and depth of the interviews with the many players in Buddy's world. I was left with a strong feeling of having experienced what life was like for budding musicians at that time. The interviews and film footage are truly amazing for the insights they give of the brilliance of Buddy, the true support of his colleagues ( who obviously worshipped him as a musician and a person), and the difficulties he faced as a pioneer in the combined writing/performing/and producing of his material in an age when Tin Pan Alley was dominant. The interviews are very recent, so they have benefit of perspective in time. You get to meet key contributors to Buddy's music from his early days to the collaborators on hits like "Oh Boy", "Rave On", etc. etc. A clearer picture of Norman Petty also emerges as a controlling but brilliant sound engineer/ who played a major role in creating the sound of the recordings through some very ingeniuous techniques.. A great documentary that can be watched over and over again...there is so much content.

This review is from: Holly;Buddy and the Crickets D (DVD)
I have been a Buddy Holly fan since I first heard him on the radio in my home town of Sydney, Australia.Whilst we heard all his songs, the main songs that is, it took many years, over 50, for me to be able to access a detailed visual history of his life and times and friends. It was great to see the other players who worked with him in those days eg a very young Waylon Jennings. A brilliantly put together documentary, even my wife found it very interesting! Although she got a bit sick of me falling asleep with the DVD player on and it defaulting to "That'll be the Day", in the early hours of the morning. A great contribution to those interested in the history and pioneers of Rock n Roll! 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful

I was very pleased with this DVD, my wife watched it with me and even though she is not as big a fan of Buddy and his music as I am, she said it was very good, and entertaining, and she learned a lot about Buddy and his music.I am pleased to add it to my collection of DVD's and CD's by Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Would highly recommend it to the loyal fan or someone just discovering Buddy! Rave ON!!!! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful

This DVD contains an excellent set of interviews with key figures in the Buddy Holly story. There are one or two obvious omissions in terms of personnel, but with the perennial legal issues surrounding the Buddy Holly legacy, that is not surprising. The stories told by some of the participants are very familiar, but they lose nothing in the re-telling and others add valuable new glosses. To this reader, the most unexpectedly interesting is Charles Bunch, now no longer with us but here describing eloquently what it meant to be asked to play drums behind Buddy Holly. All in all, a welcome addition to any Buddy Holly/Crickets addict's collection. My one criticism is the misleading way Amazon lists the DVD: it is NOT by Jerry Allison - he is simply one of many contributors. The Real Buddy Holly Story |
