5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth Story July 6 2012

I'm picky about what I read. As a novelist and short story writer (mostly crime fiction), I spend so much time writing, I don't have time to read the stuff that isn't good. I really like this novella and recommend it highly. Sam Stone does what good mystery writers are supposed to do - he gives us a story strong on character and story on setting. His L.A. setting is more than just names and descriptions of places, it's the smells, the feel, the glamor and grit of the place. This is a well written, tight story and story with a heart and a lead character that's right up there with the best PIs around.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced, suspenseful May 8 2013

The storyline was easy to read, characters were believable, though I did not like the ending that implied a "gay" thing-- too much of that in stories lately. The plot was not deep, however,
The book was worth reading.

Anyone who enjoys Dennis Lehane or Robert Parker would be well served with this book. A whodunit with a twist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, quick read Dec 26 2012

Sam Stone has a good character in Carl Porter. The story for The Hollydoll could be fleshed out to a standard mystery novel length. His buddy in California and the police detective could be developed to give the story depth. The Ending was a nice twist and all the story needed was a good subplot to get it to anpther level. I look forward to hearing from Cart Porter again. It could become a great airplane, summer at the beach or rainy Saturday read.
