The Guy,

Its a great cd that is worth buying. Something in the Air is a great song and is quite fitting in the movie The Magic Christian. Both are worth buying.

I first heard their most well known song "Something In The Air" on a BBC retrospective charts show sometime in the early eighties (I was probably about seven or eight at the time) on my fathers shortwave reciever and loved the song since, although I just purchased the whole album a few weeks ago.I have to say that this album is fantastic and well produced by the Who's Pete Townshend (who also, uncredited, plays bass). While having their own unique sound, they are reminicent of Townshend's work both solo (especially "Who Came First" and "Rough Mix") and with the Who (albeit, their softer numbers). Thunderclap Newman consists of three members (not counting Townshend): John "Speedy" Keen (drums, vocals), Jimmy McCollough (guitar) and Andy Newman (keyboards, reeds). All are incredible musicians and Townshend, Keen and McCollough make quite a tight combo which plays off of Newman's rather saloon style, loose barrelhouse keyboards. Practically every song on here is a gem and pre-date the fresh no nonsense power pop sound that Alex Chilton would give us a few years later with the band Big Star. What amazes me is that "Something In The Air" was not only #1 in the UK, but had a respectable position of the US top 40 as well. Listen to the current charts in both countries and you will be hard pressed to find anything as good. Apparently standards have lowered in the past 35 odd years. This was quite a different era (a much better one if you ask me!).

don't believe the hype,

This is not a great album...it is repetitive and weak. The single, Something In The Air, is catchy 70s pop but the rest of the album is like fingernails on a chaulkboard about 2 songs in. Unless you're a serious collector, collect something else.
