5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding Nov. 24 2008
Format:Audio CD
I have thought in the past that something like this cd/dvd set would be very interesting. Now that a project like this has finally come along I have to say I could not be happier. The level of playing technique is breathtaking and the dvd with it's interviews makes it such a complete package. I can't think of anything that would have made this better. If you are even the slightest bit interested in violins then you must buy this set. Being able to compair some of the greatest violins in history back to back is really something special.

5.0 out of 5 stars Homage to great instruments April 14 2009

Homage (CD & DVD)
Ehnes plays masterfully, as expected. This homage to the great violin and viola makers is outstanding: while I do not have a trained ear, I believe I could understand why he chose music specifically for each instrument and, to the best of my knowledge/experience, the instruments are presented in all their glory - you really can experience their individual personalities. Having specific comparison pieces allows one to gain an insight into the individual capabilities of the instruments. The DVD enhances both the artistic and pedagogical experiences. A dream to listen to.

For anyone who has ever been curious about the Golden Era violins of Stradivari, Guarneri, Guadagnini and Gasparo da Salo, this DVD/CD set is a must! Ehnes has selected the repertoire for this recording to individually showcase 12 of the world's greatest violins and violas and offers insightful commentary on each instrument's characteristics and strengths. His playing is of course masterful and entertaining!

This is a tremendous value as the photography of each instrument in the Fulton collection is no where else available. Some of the greatest, such as the 'La Pucelle' Strad, have not been seen in public for many decades! Each instrument is filmed to give a 360 degree close up view. The piano accompaniment by Eduard Laurel is worth the price already. You also receive an audio CD with 33 tracks, and a booklet with a brief history of each violin maker and instrument and color photos of the 9 violins and 3 violas. A terrific gift idea for any violinist, violist and anyone interested in collectible violins.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, unique cd Aug. 2 2009
Format:Audio CD
I bought this for a young boy in Ukraine who is studying violin and viola. His family are poor, and it is a great sacrifice for them to pay for his lessons and instruments. He has won many competitions and is very dedicated. They aren't able to afford CDs and have limited access to them in any case. They are delighted with the CD, and really appreciate the history of both instruments. James Ehnes plays exquisitely, and his warm personal touch is and added pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars gold standard June 28 2009

What a way to do a comparison! Given by one of the "genius" artists (as one of my friends calls Ehnes), gives listeners the best possible sound these wonderful instruments can make, "almost" show-casing one after the other, beautifully played (as only Ehnes can), wonderful pieces, simple arrangement to highlight even more the violin sound and melody and Ehnes' superb technique. Just wish I could hear them directly and with many more pieces ;) Highly recommended. I thought I would just skip through the DVD but I was glued to the film as the technical details of each instrument were explained and compared, close up on the special construction of some, with some historical facts. (If anyone has ever listened to the chinese erhu I recommend you listen carefully to track 9 to have a comparison within a comparison)

5.0 out of 5 stars If you play the violin, or just enjoy listening, get this ... May 25 2010
By Henry Slofstra - Published on Amazon.com

Most of us will never even touch a Stradivarius or a Guarneri let alone own a dozen or so, as David Fulton does. But here is the next best thing for only $30. Maybe even better. Not only do you see each of the dozen or so instruments in the collection, but James Ehnes has carefully selected a virtuoso piece to bring out the best in each instrument. Ehnes mastery of these instruments has to be seen to be believed, his control of the bow is peerless. (You also get to see bows that cost as much or more than a Porsche).

Techies will likely remember FoxPro, which David Fulton invented. When Microsoft bought him out, guess what he did with the proceeds? This DVD is a showcase in which no expense has been spared, and I doubt if it would recoup its production cost.

I hafta say I was blown away by it. And one reviewer said Ehnes is not a violinist's violinist? He is jaw droppingly good! Ask a violinist how "easy" it is to do the stuff he does.

I would add that the DVD production is also top notch and the photography really foregrounds Ehnes' superb technique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent player April 13 2009
By Fyoder Larue - Published on Amazon.com

Here is an excellent player playing some extremely fine violins. You probably have to be something of an aficionado to hear a lot of difference between these top end violins. To the lay person great violins all tend to sound like great violins so for us he might as well have played the same one each time. However, given that his playing is also consistently excellent, this is a musical treat, a veritable chocolate box containing a wonderful assortment of songs.

Received Homage in less than a week, exceptional CD, exceptional service. I have never had a CD that I have enjoyed more. The quality of the instruments that Mr. Ehnes played to make this CD were the top in the world and I enjoyed every minute of the recording.
