Format: Audio CD
I have thought in the past that something like this cd/dvd set would be very interesting. Now that a project like this has finally come along I have to say I could not be happier. The level of playing technique is breathtaking and the dvd with it's interviews makes it such a complete package. I can't think of anything that would have made this better. If you are even the slightest bit interested in violins then you must buy this set. Being able to compair some of the greatest violins in history back to back is really something special.

Format: Audio CD
For anyone who has ever been curious about the Golden Era violins of Stradivari, Guarneri, Guadagnini and Gasparo da Salo, this DVD/CD set is a must! Ehnes has selected the repertoire for this recording to individually showcase 12 of the world's greatest violins and violas and offers insightful commentary on each instrument's characteristics and strengths. His playing is of course masterful and entertaining!

This is a tremendous value as the photography of each instrument in the Fulton collection is no where else available. Some of the greatest, such as the 'La Pucelle' Strad, have not been seen in public for many decades! Each instrument is filmed to give a 360 degree close up view. The piano accompaniment by Eduard Laurel is worth the price already. You also receive an audio CD with 33 tracks, and a booklet with a brief history of each violin maker and instrument and color photos of the 9 violins and 3 violas. A terrific gift idea for any violinist, violist and anyone interested in collectible violins.

Homage (CD & DVD)
Ehnes plays masterfully, as expected. This homage to the great violin and viola makers is outstanding: while I do not have a trained ear, I believe I could understand why he chose music specifically for each instrument and, to the best of my knowledge/experience, the instruments are presented in all their glory - you really can experience their individual personalities. Having specific comparison pieces allows one to gain an insight into the individual capabilities of the instruments. The DVD enhances both the artistic and pedagogical experiences. A dream to listen to.

I bought this for a young boy in Ukraine who is studying violin and viola. His family are poor, and it is a great sacrifice for them to pay for his lessons and instruments. He has won many competitions and is very dedicated. They aren't able to afford CDs and have limited access to them in any case. They are delighted with the CD, and really appreciate the history of both instruments. James Ehnes plays exquisitely, and his warm personal touch is and added pleasure.
