Book Description

Sep 1 2011

How do you make cheese from pantry staples? Or create an oven smoker from scratch in just two minutes? Or make ice cream without a machine? In Home Made, Yvette van Boven shows you how, complete with an irreverent voice, step-by-step photos and illustrations, and a gorgeous photo alongside every recipe. While her recipes are rooted in a natural, from-scratch cooking philosophy, van Boven is never preachy (she doesn’t use the word “organic”); she believes that this way of cooking is fun and that the dishes simply taste better. Chapters include Preserving Vegetables, Pre-Dinner Drinks, Chocolate and Cookies, After a Night Out, Ice-Cream-You-Scream, Don’t Forget the Dog!, and more. Each chapter starts with a basic dish that you can make yourself, but usually don’t because you think it’s too complicated (think again!), and includes variations—basic bread becomes focaccia with olives and rosemary, or red cherry and thyme bread. This book will inspire you to make every dish at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Fantastic April 3 2013

Honestly, I cannot say enough about this book or it's author. Her recipes have impressed me over and over. I particularly like that there are so many wonderful pictures, it's so much easier to get worked up about a recipe, and an entire cookbook in general, when you have lots of fantastic colour pictures to inspire you and spur you on. I love how she "draws" some of the recipes, and her doodles always make me smile. If you cook from scratch, I highly recommend this to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Cookbook Oct 14 2011
By George Erdosh - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This beautifully produced book is filled with great full-page and some two-page food photos and many smaller snapshots. It claims to be cookbook for DIY cooks who like scratch cooking but basically it is an ordinary good cookbook with a huge variety of recipes having upscale, trendy, sometimes unheard-of ingredients. Some ordinary recipes combine unusual ingredient to create new flavors (tabouleh with fava beans and pomegranate). It is disappointing that many baking recipes use self-rising flour that true DIY would never touch. Most recipe ingredients are readily available but you likely to search a while before finding many (double-smoked chicken breasts, ash-covered goat cheese, taleggio). Recipes range from simple (almond-apple muffins,) to quite complex (Irish oyster soup with mussels and samphire).||The layout is well designed with recipes placed on single pages, many illustrated. They include preserving fruits, vegetables, making pickles and jams, smoking fish and meat, making cheeses and even three dog food recipes. Extensive menu suggestions for every occasion end the book. This cookbook is mostly for more adventurous cooks. A good subject index is missing; it has an index of dishes and an index of ingredients. If you want to find Muffins, e.g., it will take some looking.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL book, great story-telling, pics April 12 2012
By LO Mom - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
We really enjoyed this book! For me, it truly demystified the process of pickling, canning and preserve-making, with great step-by-step pictures (for those of us who did not have the rustic grandparent who did these sorts of things, and thus were terrified of poisoning the family with improper canning techniques).

I wouldn't say it's a book for beginning cooks - there is enough "judgment" in each of the recipes (in many she states "you may need a bit more of this, or that - depending on feel - and if, as an example, one has never made bread before, one won't know what "feel" of just-right, not too wet, not too dry bread dough means) that those with a bit of expertise can easily adapt and own.

I like also the lifestyle feel of this book - clearly it was a personal project for her, she has many stories and anecdotes that as fairly experienced cooks, my husband and I thoroughly-enjoyed.

No, it's not a "polished" read, but then again, given the title, it was never meant to be. But it does have great starter recipes broken down into easy pictures and steps, for a variety of foods (terrines, jams, ice cream) that heretofore in our family, at least, we used to buy already-made. A great, differentiated book for our kitchen library.
