Book Description

Building on the enormous success of the original Shelter, Lloyd Kahn continues his odyssey of finding and exploring the most magnificent and unusual hand-built houses in existence. Among the intriguing domiciles described in Home Work are a Japanese-style stilt house accessible only by a cable across a river; a stone house in a South African valley whose roof serves as a baboon trampoline; multi-level treehouses on the South China Sea; and a bottle house in the Nevada desert. Over 1,500 photos illustrate various innovative architectural styles and natural building materials that have gained popularity in the last two decades such as cob, papercrete, bamboo, adobe, strawbale, timber framing, and earthbags.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another Kahn classic, Jan 27 2010
By

This review is from: Home Work: Handbuilt Shelter (Paperback)
Been buying Kahn's books since Domebook. As with all the rest, Home Work: Handmade Shelter delivers. This is NOT a how-to-build book, but rather an inspiring photo journalistic montage of funky and semi-funky dwellings scattered about the globe. In the past, I've taken some of the ideas in Lloyd's books and adapted to my own situation just from looking at the photos. No step-by-step stuff here. Its real value is in conveying the "can do" and "anything goes" mindset of the builders showcased in Home Work. Implementation of many of the ideas in Home Work: Handmade Shelter will be difficult if you live in suburbia or near a building inspector. This is a great coffee table book for sorting out who among your house guests has the potential to be a friend. Also, check out his other (newer) book "Builders of the Pacific Northwest".

I love this love, love, love this book. It is definately of all the books I own my favorite book. It is wonderful and full of inspiration for anyone interested in alternative ways to live. I love to flip through and daydream about the options available when I build my own house away from the beige cookie cutter suburbs.

Handbuilt Shelter reads like a wonderful mistery. This book is fantastic, and a goldmine for house-bilders with independent ideas. Don't dream your dream, live your dream! The stories behind each picture are very inspiring!
