Jame is one of the last of the Kencyrath line, born to battle a world-destroying Lord of Darkness and resuscitate her ancestral heritage. Jame’s youth was spent hard and low in a desert wasteland. Now she has discovered her past and her heritage as Highborn—and, with it, the power to call souls out of their bodies and slay the occasional god or two (as well as to resurrect them).
First, though, Jame must survive the politics and dangers of haunted Tentir College, a school for warriors where she’s a student. At Tentir, Jame saves a young protÉgÉ from possession by a powerful, evil soul in search of a body, while combating jealous students who see her as a danger to their ambition for power and want her expelled—and blinded and dead, in the bargain! Then, just as graduation approaches, Jame’s exemption from the sacred laws of the tribe of her youth expires and she is expected to wed immediately, plus take on a family. To make matters worse, she’s challenged to a mounted combat duel to decide who is Tentir “top gun”—a competition she must win to graduation. It’s trial by fire, as Jame moves closer to a magnificent destiny she both fears—and knows she must face.

Honor's Paradox Review,
This review is from: Honor's Paradox (Paperback)
Another chapter in the saga of Jaime of the Kencyrath, featuring a feisty heroine and assorted two-and four-legged characters. The book can work as a stand-alone, but for the best background and explanation it would be best to begin with Godstalk. Some readers might be a bit lost with some of the references. The book has a satisfactory conclusion, not always present in some of the series and leaves me wanting more. Can't wait for the next installation.

I've been reading these books since day one, way back when Godstalk came out and they are as good as ever. Jame is such an engaging and wonderful character and PC has created a wonderful world. My only complaint is the covers. Jame is most often described as coltish and often mistaken for a boy. The stacked rack does not work for her! And the Arrin-ken looks off.

I have been another fan of Hodgell since the first book Godstalk way back when (early 1980s I believe?). Refreshingly original story with intriguing plots that makes me want to read faster to see what happens next and slower to relish the story. Her books are one of the few that I re-read. Even if it takes her a while to write Jame's story, it's well worth the wait. I just worry that I may not live to see the end. I'm a big sci fi and fantasy reader, and Hodgell's Kencyrath is one of my favorites.

Good book, this is the latest (6 Dec 2011) in a series written by Pat Hodgell; it is hard to tell how many books are in the series, this maybe book 8. Why, is because some books in the series have been combined into a new book with the addition of additional story material. Worth chasing down the books as this whole series is very good. Pat has a web site, if one is looking for more information .. search on P C Hodgell.I pre-ordered this book from Amazon and delivery was very good, got the book the day it was released. The prior book in the series is Bound in Blood and the next book in the series will not be out until the spring of 2013. All and all very good stories. |
