Amazon.com Essential Video

This winning 1987 epic written and directed by John Boorman (Deliverance, The General) serves as a picaresque and semi-autobiographical remembrance of a boy's coming of age during the Second World War. Exhibiting a defiant and humorous take on life during the London blitz, the family of the young boy at the center of the story (Sebastian Rice-Edwards) is a close-knit and resilient bunch, undeterred in the face of the war and reveling in each other even as they hide from the incessant bombing. To be sure, there are some poignant moments in this childhood reminiscence, such as when the boy's older sister (Sammi Davis) falls in love with a Canadian, becomes pregnant, and marries him, only to see him taken away by the military police. And the boy's mother (Sarah Miles) serves as a strong influence in the boy's life as she leads her family through this tumultuous time. The majestic sweep of the film is contrasted with so many comic moments as the people in town go about the mundane details of their daily lives yet also engage in the most absurd rituals in dealing with the onslaught of German artillery, from taking the air raids for granted to wearing gas masks at school. Boorman doesn't dwell on the horrors of war; instead he celebrates the richness and resilience of the people he remembers so fondly. An adventurous and nostalgic slice of life, Hope and Glory is a superb and memorable film. --Robert Lane

4.0 out of 5 stars Educational Use, Dec 4 2009

This review is from: Hope and Glory (Widescreen) (DVD)
For the Ontario curriculum, this movie is practically ideal for the CHT3O course profile. It provides a perfect backdrop for a study on the Blitz. Careful attention to detail by the production staff will allow students to see how families survived the air assault for so long. An assignment that accompanies the video is available from me at jonna_ebel@bwdsb.on.ca. The assignment involves preparing a three panel folder on how to survive the Blitz, with roles for all members of the family, how to secure the home and construction of a bomb shelter, and even how to spot a German plane or spy. The assignment also makes use of the Time LIFE series book about the Blitzkrieg because it contains excellent photos and descriptions of how Londoners protected key locations, how they stymied spies in the countryside and how the entire situation became the norm. Great film, and wonderful for ages 14-16 (with a careful note about the use of the F*** word for a classroom) - the war through the eyes of an early adolescent boy.

This is a film that sticks in your head. Years after I'd seen it, I searched until I could find out what it was again just so I could see it again. Not only is it beautiful, but funny and wonderful. I highly recommend this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Semi-autobiographical story by John Boorman..., Jan 10 2004

This review is from: Hope and Glory (Widescreen) (DVD)
A young boy named Bill is growing up in a small English town during the beginning of World War II where the the outlook toward the war is extremely optimistic and glorified. As Bill's family faces the departure of his father who is going to war, Bill has to handle the boys in the neighborhood who lack fatherly supervision. This creates an atmosphere of freedom and rowdiness where Bill faces new adventures with boys while the women are temporarily freed from their husbands. However, the reality of the war becomes very real when bombs begin to drop around the neighborhood. Hope and Glory is a semi-autobiographical story by John Boorman that captivates the audience, but the story feels a little choppy as if something where missing in the film. Nevertheless, it is a solid cinematic experience that will keep many thinking and laughing.
