Product Description

From midshipman to commander, experience the thrilling escapades of the ultimate high-seas hero with the HORATIO HORNBLOWER COLLECTOR'S EDITION, an eight-volume treasure chest of sweeping naval adventure and lavish historical drama.

Joining the British Royal Navy at the outset of the Napoleonic Wars, the enterprising Horatio Hornblower rises quickly from raw recruit to seasoned sailor, charting a course from the West Indies to the coast of Africa in the name of the Crown. Along the way he encounters roiling sea battles, mutiny, plague and love, but always proves himself equal to the task. Gorgeously filmed and richly produced, A&E's Emmy®-winning adaptations of C.S. Forester's classic novels star Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four, Black Hawk Down) and a stellar supporting cast that includes Robert Lindsay (Wimbledon), Jamie Bamber (Band of Brothers) and Paul Copley (Queer as Folk).

I am a big fan of Horatio Hornblower and the Aubrey/Maturin novels. So I really looked forward to receiving the Horatio Hornblower DVD set. At $50 for 8 DVDs the purchase was a good deal for me. The DVDs did not disappoint. Although not rigidly adhering to the original storyline, the screenplay respects what I liked most about the books: adventure, character development, life at sea. The cast is excellent and the production values are good. I enjoyed the DVD extras about sailing, the navy, and seamanship. If you enjoy the books or the Master and Commander movie, then you will likely enjoy these videos.

That a story with this much heart, this well acted, and this well written, could be made today is beyond belief. So much of what we see filmed today leans heavily on the ability to create CG (computer generated) landscapes and environments and very little on the story. This is a series that C.S. Forester would be happy to put his name to. A worthy tribute to his books, his hero, and to the merits of the cinema. A great DVD set. A worthy investment.

Refreshingly naive and lots of fun. Not just adventure, but a great lesson in character, watching him grow and advance as Horatio stays true to himself.

This series is quite faithful to the books. They present the life and times of British sailors in an accurate way. The acting of the cast is excellent as are the views of the places described int he books.

Special effects are a little on the BBC side, especially early on - ships, for example, get spotted way too close - but everything else is great, and improving.
