Product Description

From legendary director Steven Spielberg comes the epic adventure WAR HORSE, a tale of incredible loyalty, hope and tenacity. Based on the Tony award-winning Broadway play (Best Play, 2011), and set against the sweeping canvas of World War I, this deeply heartfelt story begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and his young trainer Albert. When they're forced apart by war, we follow Joey's extraordinary journey as he changes and inspires the lives of everyone he meets. Filled with spectacularly rich visuals -- and complete with never-before-seen bonus features -- WAR HORSE is a "Genuine Movie Masterpiece" (Rex Reed, The New York Observer) and one of the most powerful and moving stories of friendship ever told.

The sheer physical beauty of the horse and the magnificent landscape of rural Devon, England, makes the first section of War Horse a feast for the eyes, as stalwart young lad Albert (Jeremy Irvine, in his film debut) struggles to channel the high-strung energy of newly bought horse Joey into plowing a rocky field. A destructive rainstorm forces Albert's father (Peter Mullan, Boy A) to sell Joey to an army captain (Tom Hiddleston, Thor) who takes the horse into the battlefields of World War I. From there, turns of fortune lead Joey into the hands of a German private, a French girl and her grandfather, and then into the cratered no man's land between the warring armies. War Horse is jarringly uneven. Some moments are over-the-top while others are elegantly understated; the tone ranges from the broad comedy of a mid-1970s Disney live-action flick to the raw majesty of a John Ford western. The episodic storytelling doesn't help--the characters don't have time to fully establish themselves in the audience's hearts, despite some excellent performances. The greatest weakness is that director Steven Spielberg doesn't connect us to Joey himself; though it's impossible not to have moments of empathy with the trials of this beautiful animal, at other times the horse is no more than a narrative device, carrying us from one micro-story to another. Still, some episodes are unquestionably compelling (a sequence in which a British and a German soldier collaborate to rescue Joey is particularly good) and, though stylistically all over the place, War Horse is never less than visually stunning. --Bret Fetzer

We can extremely cruel to ourselves, killing, torturing, jailing, deporting, backstabbing and on and on goes this list. Sometimes it takes the Story and the spirit of a horse to remind us, that not all of us are that way. That we are more people of love and compassion. Other really good reviewers have written a synopsis of the story, I'm gonna bypass this time, and just describe the effect this now one of my top favorite films has on me. It demonstrated to me the power of compassion towards everyting living. And like other reviewers pointed out, this film includes the major elements of many good films, thet took humanity at heart. I grew up on a farm in germany after World War 2, just a few years after the War, we still had Horses to drag the plow, just like in this film.
Our farm was just as picturesque as the farm of our protagonist in the film, pehaps a little different, because our buildings where not build out of field bolders and cement, but out of "Fachwerk" a combination out of clay and wood. The characters and the ambiance in Germany was the same as the one described in the movie. I have to thank Steven Spielberg, for building this bridge between two nations. I was surprised to see our farmers son enact parts of two of my other top favorites I Was Nineteen and Adventures Of Werner Holt by his way of interacting. So now I know, that Steven Spielberg must have seen those films, and probably has been inspired by them. Because those films I consider to this day, are like any others I have seen in my almost 60 years, and I've seen many, so that I run a movie store in Parry Sound for almost 30 years now.
Sometimes I rewatch those films, just to charge myself with positive energy. This movie is now on my permanent rewatch list.

My husband and I enjoyed the movie so much, that when we saw that it was available and we could enjoy it on our older dvd player we decided we would invest in a copy. If you like first world war stories with a different perspective you will love this movie.

War Horse [2012] [Blu-ray] [UK Release] SPIELBERG’S FINEST WORK – A MASTERPIECE!

Instead of focusing on a main character to help the narrative, the movie follows the horse as he is passed on from person to person during the first World War... the characters are interesting, and come from many circles of life who are all affected in one way or another by the war. The heartbreaking story is told without a hint of blood, so do not fear a "Saving Private Ryan" redux. It is quite the total opposite and family is the name of the game. Spielberg admirably directs the actors and landscapes are wonderfully filmed (none are digital, by the way). It is a touching story at time, and some of the metaphors are a tribute to the talents of everyone involved into making this film. It is not Spielberg's finest, but it is mostly engaging, not too hard to watch, but some children may find some of the scenes a bit more crude, so better watch the film for yourself first, and then judge if your kids should watch it.

The special features on this 4-disc blu-ray set are very interesting, if a bit short. For more than 90 minutes, you get many featurettes about the making of this epic film, and it is surprising how few digital effects were actually used, but those who are less inclined with a second disc may wish to get the single-disc edition.

Spielberg's Warhorse stands as a testament to good old fashioned family filmmaking. Based on the 1982 children's book by Michael Morpurgo, the film tells the story of Joey, a thoroughbred foal who is purchased at an auction by Ted (Peter Mullan), an irresponsible and foolishly proud farmer who seeks to spite Mr. Lyons (David Thewlis) who threatens to claim the farm if rent is not paid by autumn. Ted convinces Lyons that he will be able to use Joey to plow a rock-filled field and plant a crop, ensuring a sale and the payment of rent. Things do not work out as planned, however, and Ted is forced to sell Joey to James Nicholls (Tom Hiddleston), a World War I army Captain, much to the devastation of Ted's son Albert (Jeremy Irvine), who has grown immensely attached to the horse. This sets off a chain of events where Joey crosses into the lives of several different people, including a German boy and his brother, a little girl and her grandfather, and back into the hands of the Germans under the care of a man who falls in love with Joey and his equine counterpart Topthorn. Events continue to unfold until Joey finds himself injured on a battlefield, forcing two of the most unlikely men to put aside their differences and work together for the sake of the innocent animal, finally allowing him to return to the company of his original owner, Albert, in the film's most emotional scene.

Warhorse is a melting pot of several different themes; some tragic, and others triumphant. As such, the film becomes locked in a battle with itself as to whether it should be a gritty portrayal of wartime atrocities, or the redemptive qualities of the human heart and spirit.
