Product Description

From Library Journal

A comprehensive, practical discussion of all aspects of equine ownership, Hill's book is honest about the hard work and planning necessary for responsible horse care. The author assesses the horse's needs with regard to food, water, pasture, shelter, exercise, and medical care. There are suggestions for barn and pasture design, as well as a list of resources for further information. Cost estimates are realistic, but may vary in different locales. The information is presented in great detail, and readers who find the details cumbersome probably should not consider owning horses! Recommended for public and academic libraries maintaining equine collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wealth of Information, Dec 28 2004
This review is from: Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management (Paperback)
Since I have bought this book I have read it everytime I have a free minute. I have been working i the horse industry for many years now and am thinking of starting my own horse business. Although as I read the first half of the book I realise that I already know a lot of the information, there are still certain points that are new to me. It is an excellent resource of information for anybody thinking of starting a small horse business, and in particular to those people who have not worked extensively in the horse industry. For people who already have knowledge of the horse industry there is a wealth of information on the business side of running a farm and also for pitfalls to watch out for. This book has further inspired me to follow my dream of having my own horse business on my own land.

I just received this book and I skimmed through it briefly, and I'm already thrilled that I bought it. It has excellent examples, charts comparing different things/cost/durability...

I'm planning on building my own barn in the next 5 years or so, and this book will help me tremendously!

Highly Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars horsekeeping, April 24 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management (Paperback)
Give wise details with small acerage, land useage, water supply, turnout space and essentials for the horse to survive but be comfortable at the same time. Goes down to as small as 3 acres and as large as 100. Legal aspects to consider. Composts to deal with and so on, worth buying for sure.
