A real eye-opener. The stolen art scene is like the Wild West, where law enforcement is rare and even respectable art institutions are reluctant to reveal all.

For those readers with a perverse interest in the illegal and unlawful but who don't want to risk frequenting the underworld, this is a entertaining glimpse into the seamy side of the commerce of art. Most of the characters apart from the breaking and entering practitioners are surprisingly respectable in appearance and the revered auction houses among them. This books has some great anecdotes of famous art thefts and a few recoveries as well. Educational and a very good read

I ordered this out of Canada because it wasn't available in US yet and it was totally worth it! Could barely put it down.

Jumping from Toronto, Cairo, New York to London and filled with incredible details and fascinating characters, this book wildly exceeded my expectations. I picked it up because I thought it looked interesting, and found myself riveted by the text, more so than any mystery novel. Knelman weaves a tale that is not only informative, but exciting and heartfelt. As much as I was drawn in by the all sordid details of the art crime world, I felt connected to the unique characters Knelman encounters on his many-year investigative journey.

I'm not a big fan of the "true crime" genre, but this book was absolutely fascinating, and Knelman's prose is as skillful as it is entertaining. Knelman is as much a character in the book as the diverse cast of characters he interviews (on both sides of the law), and his relationship which develops over the years with the former art-thief Paul is touching.

Read this book. Seriously-- it is exceptional.
