4.0 out of 5 stars Drama in Love! Feb. 24 2011
By Jennifer Coissiere "The Tough Critic" - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Sunscreen will not be the only thing found on the beach in Hot Fun in the Summertime by Chicki Brown. Drama! What else could happen when seven people from different walks of life vacation together in a beach house for two hot summer months? The women are the writer, video vixen, real estate agent/accountant, and the hairstylist/cosmetologist. It is through their voices the story is told. What a story it is!

Aside from Jovita, who is helplessly in love, the other three women are content in living their life as is. Shontae has buried herself into the world she creates for her characters. Considering she writes romance, she should be the one who believes in love. Due to previous bad relationships she does not give real love a chance. Even with Linda, the one who is the most levelheaded of the bunch, she too has not given love very much thought since her divorce. She keeps herself busy with her real estate and accounting career. As for Linda's younger sister, Kinnik, men are good for one thing...keeping her in fancy designer clothes and paying her bills.

While their time on the beach is supposed to be fun and relaxation, this summer will prove to be anything but. Eyes begin to open and things change fast for all the people in the beach house. Whether good or bad, this is a summer they will not forget is one thing they all can agree on.

Chicki Brown has done it again. Hot Fun in the Summertime is the second e-book she has released and it is full of romance and drama. Ms. Brown takes great care in describing the setting. By the time I was finished with the book, I longed for the same beach house and the various other places the characters enjoyed. I coin the title and dub Ms. Brown, Queen of e-book romance. Romance readers will love this book.

The author provided a copy of the e-book for review purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chicki Brown is a rising star! Dec 7 2010

Author Chicki Brown puts up another great book. Hot Fun in the Summertime is about a groups of friends who gather at a beach house for the summer on the Jersey Shore. Each of them lead very different lives with different, three-dimensional personalities to create a complex and intriguing story. Sparks fly, old rivalries surface and love blooms in the vacation house for each of its occupants. Ms. Brown keeps the reader interested as she focuses an equal amount of time on every character, giving each of them their own unique story.

With the release of her second book, Chicki Brown proves to us she can tell sassy, one-of-a-kind stories with characters we all can relate to. Keep an eye on this one she is sure to make a name for herself.

This is my first book by this author, and I really enjoyed it. I do have to say there was a lot going on because there were so many characters in the house, but the dynamic was really good. The book picked up for me following Kinnik's attack. This happens about 65%-70% into the book. The book was really just floating along until that point, with nothing really attention holding happening. Shontae and Devon's story was a good one. I loved how their relationship evolved slowly. You could really see Devon's feelings for her from the very beginning. Jo and Walter were also one of my favs. Every time Walter's appearance was described with his matching cane I could just picture him in my head with his leisurely stroll. I think if the book concentrated on less characters it would have been more successful, but it was good to read Hollywood Swinging.
3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better if... May 5 2014

To be honest, if I'd rated the book on the first 65% or so, I'd have likely gone with 4 stars. As it is, I'm struggling with between 2 and 3 stars. This book needs an editor. It started with minor problems. The book jumps from single spaced to double spaced on the same page. Quotation marks are out of place (for example, "I said, ___" instead of I said, "___).

Later things get worse. When Tae and Devon go on a date, he takes her to the amusement park. He asks her if she likes amusement parks and she replies she does. Only, they already had this conversation when she showed him around town several paragraphs before.

Near the end of the book, Linda says she has to take Tae to the airport in "a few minutes" then makes a date to have lunch with Doc afterwards. A few paragraphs later, Tae gets a call inviting her to go to Puerto Rico "tomorrow". Linda eventually takes her to the airport, tomorrow, and then has her lunch with Doc.

As someone else said, the relationship with Kinnick and Jerome is completely unrealistic. We're shown nothing about Kinnick that would make him fall in love with her. The reader is shown no redeeming qualities to this character. Jerome meets her over dinner. Has sex with her when she's "given" to him by her rapper boyfriend, and then we're supposed to believe he's fallen madly in love with her and wants to give her a better life. Sorry. No man, especially not a rich and successful one, is going to fall in love with someone who is essentially a free prostitute no matter how good the sex is. Even if the sex were that great, he'd put her up somewhere as his mistress.

At the end of this book, I saw there was a preview of a sequel. I have no interest in revisiting these characters after finishing this book.

"Hot Fun in the Summertime" by Chicki Brown was another one of her good old romance ovels...showing relationships with family and friends. This novel was written in first person making it very easy to follow. Ms. Brown was able to bring out each character...Shontae, Linda, Devon, Doc, Kinnik, Walter, Jo, Kip and a few others with all of their interwoven unique personalities and strong bonds that made this a phenomenal 'Jersey Shore' read. I liked how this author brought a group of friends together to rent a summer house on the Jersey shore.

In this read "hearts are on the mend, new loves begin, old scars serve as areminder of pain that has led to strength, and friendships grow stronger. It is a story of love, hope, and renewal." Be ready for lots of drama, suspense and romance...having many twist and turns with these seven people(four women & three men) who walk very different life's that come together for two months...sharing chores, fun, friendships, romance, lots of tension and tragedy. Will they all be able to work together to finds out the real meaning of love and friendship? Will they have fun and relaxation on the beach? This is where I say to find out the answers to these questions and more you must pick up this read to find out just what all is going in this read.

If you want a good laugh and a excellent have come to the right place for "Hot Fun in the summertime" would be my recommendation for you. Ms. Browns' sequel to this book is 'Hollywood Swinging' and the story
